asked on

outlook connecting to sites

I have just installed windows server 2008 wit exchange 2007 on a customer's site.

On a test PC I have installed outlook and linked it to the exchange server.  All of the mail and folders have been synced and mail can be sent from and recieved by the test pc.

The issue now is that every tim eI open Outlook it throws up a "connecting to sites" dialogue box and ia asking for a username and password. everytime i enter the info it throws the box back up again and bottom-right says "need password'.

Any ideas???

Is the test PC on the domain of the Customer Site?
Are you sure that the prompt is coming from Exchange? I have seen this a lot where autodiscover.example.com (where example.com is your external name) resolves to a host somewhere on the internet and Outlook attempts to connect to it.
If you are using outlook anywhere, or RPC over http, and the on fast networks checkbox is checked, it will always prompt. If it isn't this, then check the SSL.

Tools, account settings, change, more settings, connection, (bottom check box, )Exchange proxy settings...

The test PC is joined to the domain.

Not sure where the prompt is coming from, it just appears from within outlook and Outlook states (bottom right) that it needs a password (rather than saying 'connected to exchange'.

I am using Microsoft Outlook, not outlook anywhere. I'm trying to get RA to the test PC to check the exchange proxy settings.  I'll let you know.

Exchange 2007 seems an absolute nightmare, is there any way of rolling back to exchange 2003?  We've installed SBS2008 and obviously exchange 2007 came as part of it, but it doesn't support retrieving from POP mailboxes which for this client is an absolute nightmare.  Is it best to try to roll back to EX2003 or to somehow point MX records to the server?

Help would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Andy
IT SUPPORTS POP3 CONNECTOR HAVE A LOOK AT THIS ARTICLE

STILL HAVING problems let us know we can help

I found the POP3 conenctor and have set it up so that it retrieves mail from POP boxes and delivers them to Exchange boxes..all good.

The one issue I've got now though is relating to DNS as a consequence of setting up the POP3 conenctor.

As part of the setup I had to add a DNS zone of the customer's domain name (nasuwt.net).  I then had to add some static records.  As a consequence now, the server thinks it's in charge or nasuwt.net, so it won't contact DNS forwarders for addresses it can't find (like pop3.nasuwt.net, or www.nasuwt.net).

Is there any way to tell it to forward requests to 'forwarders' for names it can't resolve in the nasuwt.net zone?
Are you using external dns servers are internal dns servers ?in exchange?
I've got the Server set to forward DNS requests to a DNS forwarder (resolver1.opendns.com).  But because I've added a local zone of nasuwt.net it isn't looking elsewhere for names it can resolve on that domain.
Hmm i got it

Just add forwarders in DNS server

To configure a DNS server to use forwarders using the Windows interface

   1. Open DNS Manager.
   2. In the console tree, click the applicable DNS server.
      Where?
          * DNS/Applicable DNS server
   3. On the Action menu, click Properties.
   4.      On the Forwarders tab, under DNS domain, click a domain name.
   5.      Under Selected domain's forwarder IP address list, type the IP address of a forwarder, and then click Add.
I'm using sbs2008 and it's not quite like that.

I can add forwarders (I already have two; resolver1 & resolver2.opendns.com) but I can't specifically tell the server to look locally for nasuwt.net entries then if it fails to use a forwarder.

What's a Conditional Forwarder?  Would that work?
Hmm ok

by default it will look at local zone then only it will for ward request to external

why cant you try adding PTR record for that specific domain name
"by default it will look at local zone then only it will for ward request to external"

That's exactly what I want it to do, but it's not doing it.

How would a PTR record help?

I have a Host (A) entry under nasuwt.net of POP3.  POP3 points to the IP of the POP server.  If this record is in place then the server can resolve the IP quite happily.  If I remove the record and flush the dns then the server cannot get the IP of the POP server.  this is when I think it should be using a forwarder to resolve it.
Sorry not PTR

create HostA a record manually pop.nasuwt.net with external ip

one more this please disable IPV6 if you are not using it in your network that will create lot of confusions
Yeh I've done that, but I thought a better way would be to have the IP resolved by DNS / a forwarder just incase the address of the POP3 server changes one day.
how do you disable IPv6?
Good Question

in most cases pop server addresses are not change often

you mean to say if you delete record pop.nasuwt.net

then server not resolving rite ?

have you tried with ISP dns servers?

When i delete the pop3.nasuwt.net record then flush the dns the server can't resolve the IP when I try to ping pop3.nasuwt.net.
Add cname in dns pop3.nasuwt.net

sorry, have still not resolved this.

The client is now saying CONNECTED TO EXCHANGE but I am still getting a user and pass prompt to connect to remote.nasuwt.net (nasuwt.net = company domain).

If i ping remote.nasuwt.net I get a reply from the server IP, and if i web browse to it I get a server08 login page where I can login fine.

From within outlook I can't send&recieve, I get a error:  THE OPERATION FAILED, AN OBJECT CANNOT BE FOUND

Any ideas how to get this working?  I'm on the customer's site at the moment and need to get 8 laptops working by lunch!!!

Cheers, Andy
We have recently had the same issue at a customer site and have now resolved it.
After runnning the Test E-mail AutoConfiguration tool from Outlook it looked like it may have been a problem with the Autodiscover setup, but after tweaking the Authentication and SSL settings on the \Sites\SBS Web Applications\EWS folder all is now working OK. No more "Connecting to Sites" dialog boxes in Outlook.

I have the same problem.....where was the tweeking done exactly??

cant seem to find those areas....
Hi Tonyc92007
In IIS Manager, Default Web Site\SBS Web Applications on the EWS, and Exchange folders
(I can't say exactly what changes were made, but after some "trial and error" on Authentication and SSL the issue was resolved)
If anyone knows what exactly to change on the EWS and exchange folders please post
About the comment of disabling ip6 in short DONT it will break exchange 2007 the topoligy serv will not start
it needs ip6 to see AD I know this from experiance
i had a similar problem with Outlook 2007 trying to connect to "sites" on the 2008sbs, found that there was a CNAME entry in DNS called sites, rightly or wrongly i removed this entry and all of the Outlook 2007 clients connect perfectly and update etc with no errors.
So did I. Works fine now, but curious what fell over because of it. I don't se any related issues in the event logs, but still.....
