How to take down a exchange server that has email being re-directed through it to another exchange server sitting in a different country

Hi,

We have a client that has an email server sitting in Calgary, Canada and another email server sitting in a city over in India. My understanding is that it is currently setup so that all email comes through the exchange server that is sitting in Calgary first. If the email recipients reside on the India server it will still come through the Calgary server first and then be re-directed to the server in India.
The server in Calgary is being taken down as the Calgary operations are being shutdown. How can I determine how it is currently setup so that I can ensure that when the server is brought down that it will not effect the email?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated...thank-you in advance for taking the time to respond back...

Regards,

Hey Razi,

I will go through the articles starting on Monday as I am onsite currently and do not have the time. Are there any tools that can be run to assist me in this process?

I am a relative newbie to exchange and do not have a lot of knowledge or experience in this area. Any more help would be greatly appreciated.

I will wait to hear back and award the points versus closing this post out right now...

Thanks...

Thank-you for taking the time to respond back to this post. I will certainly follow the advise given to ensure that we do not experience any issues with the email flowing once the server in Canada is brought down.

There are no tools for this, but you should be able to know whether any servers are relaying off of Exchange server by checking Exchange system manager--> Exchange server-->Protocols-->SMTP virtual server properties--> and under Relay.  Once you know which servers are having relay rights, you can get the information from the server owners about the mails being sent. But from your words, if you are new to Exchange and RFCs, then i doubt there is much you can do with those information, but it is good to know, just in case.
