asked on

exchange 2003 to 2010 migration, cannot delete public folder system files

Hello,

I am reaching the end of a migration from exchange 2003 SP2 to exchange 2010. I have moved all mailboxes and all public folder data over to the new 2010 exchange server.

I have a front end exchange 2003 server, a backend 2003 exchange server and the new exchange 2010 server.

The problem I have is when i try to delete the public folder store on the exchange 2003 server i get the message:
you cannot delete public folder stores because it contains folder replicas

I have seen that on the old 2003 exchange server within Public Folder Instances there are 2 folders: Default (0KB) and exchange v1 (88KB).

I foolishly deleted the exchange connectors between exchange 2003 and 2010 server so further replication is not possible,

Do these folders need to be fully replicated to exchange 2010? If so can I get help restoring the connectors between 2003 and 2010 servers and then try to get those folders removed so I can delete the store on the old exchange server.

If these folders are not necessary can i get help removing these folders so i can delete the public folder store on the old 2003 exchange server.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply, all of the clients are outlook 2003. Can you tell me if the only folders present there are default and exchangev1 can I assume that all the relevant data is on the new server and that I can remove the public folders manually from the old server?
PF
a) Did you move all replicas from 2003 to 2007
b) Did you connect outlook client to the new server and see if they can access the PF.
c) Also try to create a new PF / create a new ite.
Do this from Outlook 2007 and 2010
d) Also check if Free/Busy information can be accessed from the new server.

Lets verify that public folders have actually moved. Lot many times after migration, you have empty public folders and that creates boat load of problems everywhere.
Hello sunnyc7, i have migrated from 2003 exchange to 2010 exchange.

Can you tell me how I can verify that the free busy info has been moved successfully? I have followed several articles telling me how to move it so i believe it has been moved.

In the public folder store on the older exchange 2003 server only has exchangev1 and default listed and every public folder has the new exchange 2010 server database as its location
connect an outlook to Exchange 2010 and test using that.

The old 2003 mail server has been turned off and the front end exchange 2003 server services turned off also with only new server exchange 2010 active. I have been able to add appointments and meeting requests view other users free busy info from schedules in outlook.
Looks good I'd say.

Can you test one small thing

Looks ok @ mail.mydomain EWS

Is exchange installed on a DC ?
OriginatingServer             : domaincontroller2.mydomain

You shouldnt do that.
Your basic auth is set to false. that should be set to true.

My concerns are purely this:
a) Did all PF folders migrate from 2003 to 2010.
b) Are all exchange services - autodiscover / OOF / EWS / OWA  running.
c) Can we test that all PF folders have migrated - check PF database in old 2003 and new 2010

If all the above are correct, then you can use the link above to remove the last exchange server from the domain.

You can also download Powergui.org
http://www.powergui.org/index.jspa

and download corresponding powerpack and check replication status.
http://www.powergui.org/kbcategory.jspa?categoryID=47

If all of the above are working, then you can remove 2003.

We need to set that.

Did you try configuring an outlook using autodiscover internally ?

Hi, Im not sure what they are, how do we set it and what does it do?

I have not tired to configure outlook using autodiscover internally

I am able to access all public folders/data and have tested the free/busy mechanisms in outlook successfully while the old 2003 exchange server was turned off.

I have used adsi to delete the public folder store on FE 2003 exchange and this allowed me to go ahead and uninstall the exchange server and remove.

On the back end I have found and deleted the default and exchangev1 folders on the BE 2003 server store. I will try to uninstall that server once i find the actual 2003 enterprise cd which seems to have vanished into the ether..
I am pretty sure I posted the steps on how to setup the internal external url - but for some reason I dont know why I didnt post it / didnt click submit...and now I cant find it. i have so many EE windows open, its confusing at times.
sorry about that.

I think I wanted to send you this

@ how to remove last exchange 2003.
This is written for 2003> 2007 migration but works for 2003 > 2010 too.

give this a read.

ADSI should probably be the last resort if all else fails.
No worries sunnyc. Thanks for the response. Can you tell me if I need to do the setup of the internal/external url? I had a look at the article but i cannot see it.

Ive been looking at http://www.simple-talk.com/sysadmin/exchange/upgrade-exchange-2003-to-exchange-2010---part-ii/ and http://www.petenetlive.com/KB/Article/0000234.htm to figure out the removal. Followed all the steps in them and still dont know how i ended up with the default and exchangev1 folders on the old BE exchange 2003 server.

Do i need to worry about the internal/external url and what does it do?

Thanks
you need to configure these internal URL's for outlook to work.
you must have a SSL configured with > domaincontroller2.mydomain.ie

Set-ClientAccessServer -Identity "CAS-01" -AutoDiscoverServiceInternalUri "https://domaincontroller2.mydomain.ie/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml

Get-WebServicesVirtualDirectory | Set-WebServicesVirtualDirectory -internalURL
"https://domaincontroller2.mydomain.ie/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml
Thanks for that information. I dont have any issues with outlook2003 (have no 2007 clients). Are those commands for outlook 2007 certificates?
Those are for outlook 2007/2010 clients to set the internal URL for autodiscovery.
It's better to have the server configured, otherwise when someone brings in a new laptop - you are troubleshooting these issues on client side and trying to figure out what's wrong.

Certificates are also used internally by outlook 2007/2010
Externally - Phones / RPC / HTTPS
Ive found the anwers to my query on that last one:

Internal Outlook 2007 client which is able to connect to DC, it will query an AD object service connection point (SCP) to get the URL of the Autodiscover service

For external Outlook 2007 client which is not able to connect to DC, the client locates the Autodiscover service on the Internet by using the primary Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) domain address from the user's e-mail address. Depending on whether you have configured the Autodiscover service on a separate site, the Autodiscover service URL will be either https://<smtp-address-domain>/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml or https://autodiscover.<smtp-address-domain>/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml

Does this sum it up?
yes. Correct.
im going to run that command once I make sure I have full backups (cause the weekend backups misbehaved)
Set-ClientAccessServer -Identity "CAS-01" -AutoDiscoverServiceInternalUri "https://domaincontroller2.mydomain.ie/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml

Get-WebServicesVirtualDirectory | Set-WebServicesVirtualDirectory -internalURL
"https://domaincontroller2.mydomain.ie/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml
let me know how this turns out.
will do, this backup is taking longer than hoped,
thanks
before i implement that command set can you confirm for me:

"CAS-01" I am calling my client access server "CAS-01" for the benefit of the autodiscover mechanism (i dont have a server called CAS-01 but i assume i need to assign that name anyway for autodiscover and not give it the name of my real exchange server)

you asked earlier: Is exchange installed on a DC ?OriginatingServer   : domaincontroller2.mydomain

Exchange is not installed on a Domain Controller. Does this make sense in context of the output I gave earlier?
a) CAS-01 is the name of your Exchange server with client acccess roles installed.
If you have only 1 Exchange server, then use that.

b) i think you might have changed that to hide the identity of your server.
As long as Exchange is not installed on a DC we're good.

Let me know the results after you try that.

thanks
When I run the first command I get this error:

[PS] C:\Users\administrator.OLHSC\Desktop>Set-ClientAccessServer -Identity "mail" -AutoDiscoverServiceInternalUrl "https

    + CategoryInfo          : InvalidArgument: (:) [Set-ClientAccessServer], ParameterBindingException

The second command ran without error
Set-ClientAccessServer -Identity "CAS-01" -AutoDiscoverServiceInternalUri "https://domaincontroller2.mydomain.ie/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml

it's auto discover internal U R EYE
not U R ELL
Apologies, thanks for the correction

I ran the Virtual Directory commands again:

is your internal and external FQDN same ??
its confusing a little bit you hide your domain names, as there is no difference between external and internal URL
We have not really given exchange access externally yet, we just have internal lan outlook clients at the moment. We have given two users VPN access via cisco client, they connect in and then access OWA via our VPN.
At the moment our internal and external FQDNs are the same, Does this make sense?
check if autodiscover works by trying to get one outlook to connect.
We only have outlook 2003 clients. We set them up by manually specifying exchange server and mailbox name. How can I test autodicover with outlook 2003?
Thanks
You cant.
Can you download a trial outlook 2007/2010 and then see if autodiscover works.
ill give that a try, thanks again
I installed 2010 on a test machine on our LAN, logged in as a user and when I opened outlook it went straignt into that user account mailbox.
I have also uninstalled Exchange 2003 but had to delete the public fodler store using ADSI as the default and exchangev1 folders would not move. I went into ADSI and deleted the exchange public folder store for that exchange server:

Configuration
+ CN=Configuration
+ CN=Services
  + CN=Microsoft Exchange
   + CN=YOUR ORGANISATION
    + CN=Administrative Groups
     + CN=First Administrative Group
      + CN=Servers
       + CN=SERVER NAME
        + CN=InformationStore

Once that was manually deleted and I correctly dismounted/deleted the stores I was able to uninstall exchange 2003.
So your autodiscover is working and you uninstalled the last exchange 2003 ?
Autodiscover seems to be working internally anyway(thanks for your help on that), and I have uninstalled the last exchange 2003 server.
What are the other issues we are left with ?

I'd say monitor your Exchange server closely for a month after removing the last exchange 2003.
I really think that is most of it unless you can think of anything else I need to look at
I think we have covered the issue as described in your original question.

I'd say just for kicks run the bpa health scan
Open emc
Toolbox
Best prac analyzer
Run health scan

Thansk

The only error I get is:
Active Directory domain 'OLHSC' has an unrecognized Exchange signature. Current DomainPrep version: 12639
I did run a domain prep for the domain so I dont know what this mean
If you are running exchange 2010 - then that's fine if you have already domainprepped
12639 is Exchange 2010

If there's nothing else - mails are flowing normally, autodiscover is working then you can close the case.
Thats fine then. You can close the case.

This is another issue from BPA:

The public folder store where the site offline address book is hosted was not detected. The hosting server may be unreachable or the public folder store does not exist. Public folder store: CN=Public Folder Database 0717343239,CN=Databases,CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT),CN=Administrative Groups,CN=OLHSC,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=MYDOMAIN,DC=ie.

run this on exch shell

get-offlineaddressbook | fl
This might be another glitch in BPA i think the offlne address book is ok

Can you give that a go.
Also try to get your free/busy - and see what you get.

So your PFs are good.
I think you can ignore it.

Might be an issue with BPA
yep
Did you update the BPA before you run those tests ?
Under database management tab I see my mailbox database and my public folder data
base listed.

When i click on mailbox database it shows Database copies and gives database details however when i click on public folder database it says there are not items to show in this view however it says that it is mounted in the pane above.
that means your public folder is empty.
As long as PF is mounted you are ok.

Just for kicks

Use the outlook 2010 you downloaded earlier and try to create some public folders.
Copy / paste move / delete
see how that works.
I have created a new public folder using outlook 2010 and i could see that folder and the message i copied into it from my outlook 2003 client too.
How does this sound?
Sounds good.
that means your pf's are working.

tidy! thanks

I think ill wait till tomorrow though before I put it to bed.
yep @
post back if you get any errors.
I had requested help removing the public folders from the old 2003 exchange servers allowing me to uninstall exchange 2003. I had found out how to do this using ADSI. Once I had deleted the stores I was able to uninstall successfully.

The very helpful and accomodating sunnyc helped with an issue i had not even considered; autodiscovery for outlook configuration and running post migration checks to ensure public folders were working ok.
You're welcome.
thanks for the points :)
no worries, thanks yourself
