Not able to replicate public folders - SBS 2003 migration to new server

Hi,

I am moving my sbs 2003 to a new hardware using this manual: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc747454(WS.10).aspx

my source server was in german , and destination is english - so i have: erste administrative gruppe and first administrative group And when i click replicate, and add, i get this error:

"there are no public stores which do not have a replica of this folder"

Nothing in the logs about this issue, except of this:

Event ID:13508

he File Replication Service is having trouble enabling replication from source to dest for c:\windows\sysvol\domain using the DNS name source.domain.local. FRS will keep retrying. Following are some of the reasons you would see this warning.

[1] FRS can not correctly resolve the DNS name source.domain.local from this computer. [2] FRS is not running on source.domain.local. [3] The topology information in the Active Directory for this replica has not yet replicated to all the Domain Controllers.

This event log message will appear once per connection, After the problem is fixed you will see another event log message indicating that the connection has been established.

could somebody help please?

Increase the logging on the Information store and then ougoing replication messages in the Exchange system manager.

Also check if the new server has a sysvold folder shared as the error message you are referring implies you're having AD replication issues
For the AD issue try running:

1. repadmin /kcc.
2. repadmin /syncall /e /P
3. Restar NTFRS service

I have found the sysvol folder on the source server, but on the destination server it is not shared, or does not exist,
how is this possible? i am doing everything as it is written in the manual.
How can i fix this issue?

thanks very much
best regards

You can always try burflags... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290762

Make sure you pay attention when implementing this!
I have run this on the dest server:
1. repadmin /kcc.
2. repadmin /syncall /e /P
3. Restar NTFRS service
no change

should i make this on the dest server?
"You can always try burflags... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290762"
Burflags requires a change on both target and source server.
Sysvol and netlogon folders are not shared on the destination server, but they exist.
should i use the Authoritative FRS restore, or the Nonauthoritative restore, or both + Global vs. replica set specific reinitialization ?

thanks very much

Could you help with blurflags please? Dont know exactly what to do.. :-/
Hi,

I think we resolved your AD issues in another question. so now we just have the public folders to deal with.

How much user data is in the public folders?
Are there a lot of mail enabled public folders?

The reason for my questions is that if the mailboxes have all come across OK and the public folder database is quite small it may be easier to just export the public folders to PST and, then start with a fresh public folder store, and re-import.

I know this is not the cleanest solution, but it may save you heaps of time and other issues down the track. If this is not an option for you let me know and I will start troubleshooting with you

Andy
I am also not able to replicate Offline address book.. etc. I have cca 8 folders.
The OAB can be recreated on the new server as can all the other system folders
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822444

But you should not need to do anything in the technot above.
If you have installed a new server it will have a new public folder store, it will have in it all the system folders etc. When you re-home the Exchange roles and rehome and rebuild the OAB it will be recreated in the public folder store on the new server. If all your mailboxes are on the new server (which they will be because it is a migration) the old server becomes irrelevant, and you do not need to replicate back to that. so you can get away with just importing the user data to nee server.

It's not the recommended method, but it works. you have a bit of tidying up to do afterwards, but most of that is covered in the process of decommisssioning the old server (same part there you rehome the recipient update services etc)

If you need to have mailboxes on both servers, than thats a different story.
I will not need the old server, just the new one. Public folders are created on the destination server:

Internet newsgroups
Archive
Contacts

How should i move the folders from the source server?
How can i move the offline address book? Or should i just configure the new server  for "responsible for generating the Offline Address List" ?
To move the non system folders just connect to the soucre serevr with outlook and use "File->import export" to export to PST and then import the same way on the new server.

For the OAB - Exactly as you suggested. You will need to do this as part of decomissioning the old server anyway.
ps. for the import - need to create the folders and their permissions in the public colder tree before you can import into them....
And when should i do this step? right befor demotion, or i can do it now? i will move mailboxes today.

Thanks
Once you have started the mailboxes moving you will have time to do the public folders on the side. The mailbox move is about 5GB/hr (not fast) so you should have plenty of time when that is happening to do the public folders.

If the public folders are email enabled, remember to stop SMTP and remove the email address on the old folder so they do not recieve any email while you are exporting and importing. Also remember that if the folders are email enabled you need to have all that setup on the new server and port 25 directed to the new serevr before you turn port 25 back on.

if you only have 8 folders with user data in them it should be a walk in the park.
"Also remember that if the folders are email enabled you need to have all that setup on the new server and port 25 directed to the new serevr before you turn port 25 back on."

how can i configure this?

I assume that you are behind a router and have port 25 forwarded to your existing server.
You will either have to change port 25 to port forward to the IP of the new server, or change the IP of the new server back to the IP of the old server.

As for the mail enabling. Remove the email address off the folders on the old serevr and mail enable on the new server (right click, email enable) or similar - don't have 2003 serevr infront of me right now.
I am using Pop3 for incoming mails.. so i think i dont need to configure port forward. I will let you know tomorrow.. if it went well.. or catastrophy.

thanks very much :)
Sweet - no worries about that then :) getting late over here now, so won't be online for much longer. If you run into dramas SunnyC7 is pretty well versed in this area and seems to think along the same lines as I do. https://www.experts-exchange.com/M_5929264.html his email is at the top of his profile. if you get stuck flick him an email referring this case number.
I have tried to set the destination server for the offline address list generation.. On the source server i have clicked browse ... but it does not see the my destination server, but just source server. but i can ping the destination server with fqdn.

What happens if you try the same on the destination server?

Have you rebooted the destination server since we fixed the AD replication issues earlier?
The same from the dest server.
I will try to reboot, Dont want to bother you, i will post later :) see you tomorrow. Thanks very much for the help :)

Hello, i have restarted the server yesterday - nothing has changed. Than reinstalled exchange on the destination server, but still the same issue. I have clicked reinstall button on exchange installation. Should i remove it first, restart server.. and then install it again?
Got it :) I have uninstalled the exchange server... It asked me the name of the administrative group. I have choosen the german erste admin. gr.  and after that the replication was working.

Thanks very much.

Best regards
Patrik :)
Sorry I missed your post yesterday... Glad you got it sorted.
