Xerox WorkCentre 7232 SMTP Error 016-766 with Exchange Server 2007

Hello,
I have an odd problem with a Xerox WorkCentre 7232 Scanner. My employees often use the “Scan to Email” feature of this device, and for the most part it works perfectly. Every once in a while, however, it will fail, and print out a “Transmission Report - Job Undelivered” page with the following:

Completed with an Error (016-766): SMTP Server File System Error.

The manual with this error code says to contact the System Administrator, and that would be me. As far as I can tell, there are no errors in Exchange around the times of these errors. I have looked in the following places for clues to this issue:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\TransportRoles\Logs\MessageTracking
C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\TransportRoles\Logs\ProtocolLog\SmtpSend
C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\TransportRoles\Logs\ProtocolLog\SmtpReceive

Are there any other places to look for specific errors pertaining to this issue? The errors come at random times, and pick random users. The only constant is the Xerox machine itself. They use it quite often, scanning large amounts of papers at a time as they are in the process of archiving a lot of past data. Xerox has been contacted and they claim this is an issue with Exchange.

Exchange Server 2007-Microsoft Corporation-Version: 08.02.0247.002

Thanks for the help.

Is it possible that the scanned images are exceeding your size limits set in the SMTP connector or in Global Settings?

This MAY appear to be the isue... Some users will cann 300+ page documents, some will scan 120+ pages, some will scan 1 page, but it seems that there is no preference to the size of the jobs throwing this error. All recipeints have plenty of room in their mailboxes, but the SMTP connector does have a size limit of 10240KB. Would this throw an error somewhere that I could view? I could raise the limit on these, but I don't want to make changes that don't need to be made either... Problem is that the error is so random it could be days before it happens again.

I have taken a look at the log files on the SMTP connector. There is no record whatsoever of these documents ever being emailed out of the Xerox. There are plenty of successful ones, but nothing at the time of these errors. I am beginning to think that the Network Card on the Xerox is going bad. It has happened before in other places we consult, but usually it just goes out, and does not intermittently glitch like this. Unfortunately I can't see an issue with Exchange at this point. Besides calling Xerox and fighting with them about this, do you have any other suggestion? I hate waiting for an error that may not happen anytime soon...
That could be.  There is also the possibility of a DNS issue if the Xerox is not set up with an IP address for the mail gateway.  Do you have any odd connectivity issues anywhere on your network other than the Xerox?

Something you could do is set up an alternate SMTP gateway for testing.
I guess I should follow up on this question. We are contracted IT for this company, so we are there a few days a week working with "in house" contacts that are supposed to handle the simple IT issues and relay the bigger stuff to us. Well, I was misinformed from the beginning. There was only one scan session throwing the error. Not sure why, but it was just the one scan job. I was told they found out what piece of paper was causing the error, scanned the job without it, and all was working fine. Not quite sure how one piece of paper caused this SMTP error, but then, I am not ever sure I am getting the full story or the correct information from some people.

Thanks for all the help!
So, because you were misinformed and posted a question here with inaccurate information, you think you should just close the question and not award points?

I don't mean to be a putz here, but whenever you post a question on EE you take up the time of people who look at and try to help you with your question.  We do this in part because it is fun.  We do it in part for the points.

You really should consider your original question and my answers to it.  If you think my answers did not fit the question you asked, by all means just close the question.  But if my answers could have helped with resolving the question you asked you should award points to me.
Not at all... I tried to award you the points, but I must have done something wrong... And once I hit submit, I could not go back in anyway that I could see. Your answers were very valuable in this issue, and I had every intent on accepting your answer as the solution, and showing my last comment as a "partial solution". This is the first time that I have used EE as a resource for a solution to a problem I had, my coworkers posted the other questions.

I didn't mean to offend anyone, and it looks like I can try to select an answer again...
Got it.  Thanks for clarifying!
