So this will all depend on your company requirements.

Its like, whom you want to give your car control. If you want to control your Car by yourself. Then go with Microsoft. Else you know the answer.

I will go with MS without any doubt.
I understand you question more with comparing hosted services from MS (BPOS) & GAPPS (Google)

It goes with the requirement, size, what you already and how much are you willing to support.

1. Users already using Outlook, wouldn't be very happy with the Web Mail of Gapps
2. The worst of all is Calendar, which isn't very user friendly and would require you keep the Calendar Browser page open all the time to be notified about your meetings.
3. Though google may rule the consumer mrket.....they have a long way to supporting Enterprise Customers.
4. They are yet to acheive maturitly in supporting the Enterprise Customer...where MS have been ruling the Enterprise Market for sometime now.
5. Other thing I could remember, Google Apps doesn't provide the subfolder.....Only Labels....which doesn't go very well with the Users, Who have been used to categorise their emails in subfolders.

If its a small setup.....with less to spend...you sure can live with Google Apps.
If its an large Enterprise, Google apps is big change and sure would have huge resistance from Users.
You may have spend considerable time in training Users on GApps usage.

BPOS is an expensive solution with wide range of solution available for archiving and others.
Primarily, they provide you an high quality Enterprise look and support too.

They can be a health debat on each of the positives and negatives........If I had the money I would go for BPOS.

I am currently in the process of migrating my (60+) users to Google Apps from our in-house Exchange Server (2000).  I now have about (25) users migrated over, but there are definitely a few things I wish I had known before moving ahead because it may have impacted my decision.  Price was probably the biggest factor, although we learned that we had to dish out more $$$ on a 3rd party solution for the missing 'Public Folders' & now possibly more due to unsupported Windows 2000 OS.

If you were using Exchange previously, make sure that the features you require are still available (ie: Public Folders).

Also, make sure all of the servers that you wish to install the Google Outlook sync tool on are Windows 2003 or newer, otherwise you'll be spending more $$$ to upgrade.  AND, make sure you have Office 2003 SP3 or newer installed too, otherwise you'll be spending.....you get the idea.

I'm still in the process, but am not convinced up to this point that Google Apps is an ideal Exchange solution / replacement.  The very 1st thing a Google salesman should do before pitching a sale to a  company is to make sure that the customer's environment is compatible with their product rather than making a sale 1st & then dealing with the issues later.  Or at least provide a REQUIRED ITEMS CHECKLIST for the customer to go over before they start the transition.
