Question

authenticate user by the second domino server

Asked by: ezlee

I am new to Domino. I built a second domino server (R6) in the same domain (I think this is the Configuration Directory server, and the first one is the Primary directory server). But when the first server is offline, I could not logon to notes or administrator or check mail, it always checks the first domino server and says could not find the server.

Even I registered a local user based on the second server, and it still tryied to locate the first server when checking email.

My question is that: could other server be used for authentication if the primary directory server is offline? (just like a 2nd AD server in NT)

thanks!

Don't set the second server up as a configuration directory server.  I don't recommend that, unless you have good reasons (like you don't want your addressbook on a server in the dmz or something).

So to change this, set the value to Primary directory in the server document for your second server.  Replicate the addressbook between the 2 servers (from the server console on server1, type "rep server2 names.nsf",  and make sure the addressbook replicates by itself (make a Connection document, set the 'files to replicate' to admin4.nsf and names.nsf, and the interval to 5 minutes.  To make sure your second server has the full addressbook, check the replication settings for the Domino Directory.  In 'space savers', at 'Include' , it should say "All Fields" and not "Configuration documents only".  If not ok, set this, and replicate again.

Restart your second server, and I think you will be ok.

cheers,

Tom

My question is that: could other server be used for authentication if the primary directory server is offline? (just like a 2nd AD server in NT)

Yes, all you need to do is cluster your secondary server with your Administration Domino Server. Very simple to do. In the domino administrator help database, it gives you detail instructions on how to do this and as well as different clustering topologies.

No need to cluster in this case - not the solution in this case, with just 2 servers ?  Just don't use the Configuration directory.

Clustering is fantastic and easy to set up, and can increase availability, but there are more things to consider before rushing in and setting it up (indeed very easy). You have to make sure you have enough diskspace, you have to decide which applications to cluster, see if you want to cluster web applications too - so not the answer in this case, and no need to set it up to have authentication on your second server.

cheers,

Tom
