Question

Recertify user ID file after certificate is expired. I am getting error "The note does not contain either a public key or a certificate."

Asked by: ComputerGuy37

I am reasonably new to administering Lotus Notes. I took over supporting a previous installation. My tech level is high but low in Lotus Notes.

I understand how to register a person and create the new account that has access to the server. I have a user thats certificate has expired and now cant log in and use the notes server. I have logged in using admin.ID and tried to RECERTIFY the user from the public address book and it gets to the last step and says it failed. I went into the Certification_Log on the server and it says "The note does not contain either a public key or a certificate." under the record for that users recertification request.

I am sure I am missing something obvious here but I am not familiar enough to see it. Any help you all could offer would be much appreciated. I need to get this user up and working so I am going to make this a urgent request.

Yes - this can be a difficult problem even for an experienced admin :-)

Now what version are you on ?  Are you sure you are using the correct certifier to do the recertify ?  Or are you using the CA process ?  Recertifying should be relatively easy, if you use the correct id's and the documents in your names.nsf are 'correct'.

cheers,

Tom

The following worked for me:
Instead of trying to "recertify", create a "new" user with the same name/pass as the old one, no mail account and check "Create a Notes ID for this person". Then replace the users expired ID file with the new one.
The more experienced admins might have a problem with this method, but the notes ID that was created has worked perfectly with that user's mail, DBs and other stuff.

My problem is here - with (my own) solution:

That's a last resort.  You'll loose all information stored in the id file (like secret keys, other certificates) that could have been stored over time.

I think you should focus on getting recertify to work, and figure out how to get it to work properly.

cheers,

Tom

I had exactly the same problem with this! When the certified was registered in Domino Administrator you will have selected 'Registration Server' as 'Local' - if you have done this then the certifier will not be recognised by Domino and the address book.

If this occurs you cannot change the certifier or re-certify a user because Domino doesn't recognise this! An easy way:

Register a new organisation or organisational unit and ensure that you choose the registration server as the correct Domino Server so it will put this in the certlog.nsf - once you have done this, choose the ID you wish to re-certify and go through the usual process.

This resolved the issue for me!

Cheers,
Steven

To answer Bozzie4: There is no certified Public Key anymore on this users document. There are on other users documents that are still certified.

sh411036: I am not sure exactly what your saying. When I am trying to recertify this user I have the proper "Registration Server" connected and am using this server to recertify the user. We have only one server and I understand that Domino Admin could be connected to "Local" not "OUR_SERVER", but it is connected to the right server. If I missed the intent of your post please let me know.

Thanks

Hi,

When you register an organisational unit Domino Administrator defaults to registering the Certifier ID as 'local' - this will create the OU/Organisation fine but will not register in the certlog.nsf thus why you are getting the error when trying to re-certify. Basically, because it was registered locally and not with the Domino server it's saying 'I cannot verify that this ID is part of my network therefore I am not going to certify you'.

To solve, regsiter a new organisation with the Domino server and make sure the Registration Server is 'SERVER/ORGANISATION' not 'Local' re-certify the user and this should resolve the issue.

Filtering through your question it looks like you'll need to manually ceritify the ID, recertifying will not work. If your the domino administrator and have the domino administrator client installed on your machine. To manually certify an ID, you'll need the users ID and password, then go to the configuration tab and click on certify and use whatever certifier that you usually use, then select the user's ID that you need to recertify and enter in the password. Then put the id back in the clients machine after you certify it. Maybe I missed something on this. Good luck.

Maybe i'm missing something but I had the exact same problem! The certifier ID (i.e. /Organisational Unit/Organisation@Domain) isn't logged in the certlog.nsf file thus cannot be certified and approved. Simple way to do things is create a new organisational unit (re-certify it with the organisation) and make sure the registration server is set to the Domino Server and not Local. This will definately work - I came into a company and found that it was done all like this and spent an age migrating everything across so the certlog.nsf would recognise this!
