Question

Is it possible to migrate an R5.0.8 server to a 'clean' R6.5.2 installation?

Asked by: rodti

As a consultant, I am being asked to move a 5.0.8 server running on Windows NT4 server to new hardware running Windows Server 2003. The resident administrator has asked that a fresh 6.5.2 Domino installation be installed and the old data migrated onto it.

However attempts so far have failed, using the old server ID in a "Subsequent server in the domain" setup, specifying another server to get the NAB etc from does not work, in fact the server simply fails to start up - a console window appears but no further activity takes place.

I have told the admin that the method is probably not supported by Lotus, and that the recommended method is to install 5.0.8 on the clean server, copy across the old data and then upgrade to 6.5.2 in place, but he is adamant that it must be done the other way, as he feels that the old installation is 'dodgy' and wants it to be a clean start.

Can anyone categorically confirm or deny that migrating in this way is possible, maybe by using a few tweaks?

Many thanks

Rodti

I could be wrong here.  But I think it may depend on the order of the steps you take, and the files copied to the new machine.

Check this article for the steps, including using the first server setup, and disconnecting it from the network when you launch it the first time.

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?fdoc=wplcdomi&rs=463&uid=swg21087009

Theoretically, if you copy the data directory and file structure over to the new server, you should be able to do a clean install.  The only thing you'll have to contend with is any modified templates.

But, you're right in some respects in that you'll have to copy the existing nab to the new server, and if the previous installation was "dodgy" then the "dodgy" parts might be in the server and configuration docs which will be migrated anyway for backward compatability.

But see if the steps above help you get the new server started, and be sure to make a list of things to do before you continue.   At least this way you have the time to sort through and find issues since you have the other server running.

This is possible, but you can't just copy over the complete data directory

I'd install a second server first, then start it up (you should be fine until here , this is a standard new install 'new server in domain')

Now if that works, you can start copying files over, by replication or by OS level file copy.
Don't copy system databases, like names.nsf, log.nsf, events.nsf, cache.*, etc over !  Don't copy Lotus templates over from the old to the new system.

A a last step, you could now try to switch identities between these 2 servers.  Make a backup first :-)

cheers,

Tom

Thanks, I have seen the linked document and it looks a secure, predictable solution; however it is not jumping up a version.

I think this is where the unpredictability creeps in, and to feel happy about it I would need to research in detail exactly what the install program does ( the description in the admin help only scratches the surface).  I don't have the time for this, fascinating though the execrcise would be :)

So, to me, it still seems logical to follow those instructions, make sure it starts, routes, replicates etc OK on the new box, and then upgrade it to 6.5.2.

This would have the effect of cleaning up the install and upgrading into the bargain.

Boz,

>>install a second server first<<  LOL, this was my first thought, but then it would have to be a new server ID, and  you'd have to spend time migrating the email files, and users with the server on line.   It would be a truly clean install, it would just take longer to accomplish.   The biggest problem would be databases with the old server ACL, right?

I agree that there may be issues when trying to add a new server with a newer version into a Domain where the Admin server is not the same version.

You have a couple of choices.

1) Upgrade the old server to R 6.52 first ( actually R 6.55 FP1 would be best ).

2) Then try to install the additional server on the new hardware.

or

Install a fresh Server creating a new domain.

Then copy all the *.nsf files, ID and change the Notes.ini to the old server ( The old server will have to be off at this stage ).

I would then reinstall R 6.52 to make sure that any Db's get updated  templates including the Domino directory ( names.nsf )

I hope this helps !

Many thanks to everyone for their input on this.

The accepted answer is pretty much what I had decided to do, and it confirmed my thinking on it.
