We have two lotus notes domino servers running in our environment, one is our MTA and the other is our primary domino mail server. We are running 7.0 on both of them. Our notes MTA is also our Blackberry Enterprise Server (v. 4.1). The notes MTA is running Windows 2k sp4 and our domino mail server is running Windows 2k3 sp2. Our mail routing goes like such: Incoming email hits our barracuda, then routes to our mta, then goes to our note domino mail server. Outgoing goes from domino mail server, to the notes mta, then to the barracuda out to the internet.
We are having problems with our incoming mail being held up in our MTA, as it is losing its connection with the domino server. The log files state (as well as the server console) that their is a network problem, however, we can not fine one. This problem is intermittent, as the incoming email will get held up in the mta mail.box for up to two to three hours (could be less) then gets released all at once. As of now, since we have not been able to discover the reason why their is a lose of connectivy, we stop and then restart the "notes rotuer" on the mta, which solves the problem. Both servers, primary domino mail server and mta server, are both in the same rack and in the same switch. They both have 4gb netwok ports, and are plugged into a cisco catalyst gb swtich. The nics were teamed at one time, but we have un-teamed them for trouble-shooting purposes.
Steps I have taken to try to figure out the problem:
1. Unteamed Nic's
2. Used different switch
3. Logged activity, but got nothing more than the error: "06/04/2008 03:00:11 PM Router: No messages transferred to DELLNOTES.PHILADELPHIA/UNI
TED via Notes: The server is not responding. The server may be down or you may be experiencing network problems. Contact your system administrator if this problem persists."
4. Tried different network cables
5. Used only single nic's on both boxes
6. Checked DNS - nothing seems to be wrong, can ping and map drives fine while error is occuring
7. Even while eveything is working fine, I can not telnet to the mta from either the domino mail server or any box, I do not know why. But I don't know if that can be an issue/help in solving the problem, but I am putting that out there
8. Have sent our address book and notes.ini to ibm support, but they say all looks good
Any ideas from anyone out there, any new idea to me would be priceless!!!
Thanks in advance and sorry to be so long winded with the problem description
