Question

Lotus Notes and iPhone via IMAP\SMTP

Asked by: chuku

I'm using Domino Server 7.0.2 and since the number of iPhone users around here grow rapidly, I need a solution for their connections.
IMAP is enabled on the server and iPhone can connect to it and receive emails
I'm stuck with the send part. we monitor and archive all emails which mean we MUST see all outgoing emails either on each nsf file (per user) or at any other nsf file (like a dedicated nsf for outgoing SMTP). using SMTP as is send emails (I was able to do it via MS-Outlook but not via iPhone) but doesn't keep a copy anywhere (relay only)
any ideas?

iNotes is only supported in Domino 8

by: SysExpertPosted on 2009-06-25 at 11:04:35ID: 24714235

Then it is time to upgrade, since 8.5x is already out

I hope this helps !

well, I wish I could but we have a very complicated database and unless v8 bring a significant added value (and for those who pay, mobile access is not that important) we will not upgrade
I still looking for a solution on v7

Why don't you configure iPhone to sent outbound mail through Domino SMTP  and configure Domino to archieve/copy all this mail into nsf database using server rule?

by: chukuPosted on 2009-06-26 at 06:53:51ID: 24720930

that is because I don't know how to configure Domino to archive/copy all this mail into nsf database using server rule or if it's even doable (reminder - it is a Domino 7 server)

by: fgrushevskyPosted on 2009-06-26 at 07:05:35ID: 24721034

the server rules are available since 6.5.x

you can read about it here or you can open domino administrator help database and search for "Setting server mail rules"

http://www-12.lotus.com/ldd/doc/domino_notes/6.5.1/help65_admin.nsf/b3266a3c17f9bb7085256b870069c0a9/8a1a16692f4c383085256dff004b1e37?OpenDocument

what you need is to setup journaling rule. the help has detailed information on how to do it, the only thing you need to decide on how you can select iPhone messages for journaling.  I know that by default iPhone puts a footer in the message, so this could be selection criteria

by: chukuPosted on 2009-06-26 at 08:22:42ID: 24721877

let's say I create the following rule:
condition: sender is user@DominoDomain.com
action: Journal this message
since all messages (via Lotus Notes or iPhone's  SMTP) go through mail.box, wouldn't it create a double entry for ALL emails from user@DominoDomain.com?
where would the message be saved? is there a way to tell it WHERE to save it?
also, is it possible to use the header input to filter wanted emails/ here are 2 fields that can be useful:
X-Mailer: iPhone Mail (7A341)
Mime-Version: 1.0 (iPhone Mail 7A341)

by: chukuPosted on 2009-06-30 at 12:03:17ID: 24748362

still hope to get some answers on this issue

by: SysExpertPosted on 2009-07-07 at 19:19:44ID: 24800087

Journal is a single NSF file. See the Admin Help on how to set it up.

All journal rules put the mail in the journal file

I would do testing, preferably in a Lab environment

by: chukuPosted on 2009-07-08 at 04:45:29ID: 24802643

so would this file contain every email from mail.box?
on the server rule config options I didn't see an option to sort by header, as in my case - journal only SMTP based messages (or use header parameters)

by: chukuPosted on 2009-07-16 at 11:21:14ID: 24872042

one more try: anyone with a solution?

by: chukuPosted on 2009-07-22 at 08:02:01ID: 24915766

well, journal is duplicating messages and we can't keep it in production unless we find a way to filter the messages
unless anyone has a solution I'll ask to close this question (and will have to live without the iPhone connection :()
