Question

Domino 7 - No route found to domain gmail.com from server MyMailBoxServer/MymailDomain. Check Server, Connection and Domain Documents in The Domino Directory

Asked by: cpadm

Hi,

Our Notes clients can no longer send external emails out and receive the following bounceback from the Domino mailbox server:

"No route found to domain gmail.com from server MyMailBoxServer/MymailDomain. Check Server, Connection and Domain Documents in The Domino Directory".

The hub server and SMTP gateway seem to be working correctly, and we can send and receive internal mail, and also receive external mail, BUT we cannot send external email...

Sounds like a DNS resolution issue. From the server itself can you resolve any names?

Open up a command prompt on the server itself if windows or SSH into the box if Linux/Solaris and try pinging gmail.com

It should resolve to an IP address. If it does not then check your IP address confguration and verify that the DNS servers specified can resolve the addresses.

If it is not a DNS configuration issue then check your firewall settings and verify that the Domino server is allowed outbound.

 Hi there cpadm, ,,

First of all, as you mentioned >>>"No route found to domain gmail.com from server MyMailBoxServer/MymailDomain. Check Server, Connection and Domain Documents in The Domino Directory"<<< so is this a problem receiving and sending emails to Gmail only or to all external address ???

On the SMTP gateway( or any domino server which inbounding/oubounding emails go through go to the command prompt and type the following

telnet mail.yahoo.com 25 ,,,,,,
if you get a black screen on the CMD prompt that is ok but if you get an error of " Connection Failure" it seems to be a port issue so please refer to your Network Administrations for help

Check on all your Domino servers if any of the features of " Private whitelist", "private blacklist" or " DNS whitelist " is enabled ,,, you can refer to

Did you check the connection documents for SMTP and internet for the SMTP server ???

Check some similar cases :

Cheers for the comprehensive answer akhafaf!

To give you a better idea of our Domino architecture. We have 6 Mailbox servers that point at one hub server, that

points at one SMTP gateway server.

-The 6 mailbox server can all email each other's mailboxes internally.
-All mailboxes can receive internal and external mail.
-No internal mailbox can send mail to any external domain. e.g *@yahoo.com, *@gmail.com,*@live.com,..
-Both the hub and gateway SMTP server seem to be functioning relatively normally!
-The SMTP server CAN telnet on port 25 to mail.yahoo.com and other external STMP servers.
-The other mail servers cannot use port 25 because they are using the NRPC protocol (I think...) and our firewall

is blocking them from using port 25 to the web.

As I'm currently typing this from my bed, I cannot test Notes functionality until tomorrow morning when I'm back in

the office, but I appreciate any help you can give me!

Hi there cpadm,,,

Thank you very much for being nice with me and thanks  a lot for these usefull information . However, from my experince the most important things which precludes ( out bounding ) emails from going out of the ( SMTP ) mail server to the internet are as follows :

1- The SMTP connection document from your mail servers to the Internet . So check this one first

2- As I mentioned before the new features of LN7.x like " Private whitelist", "private blacklist" or " DNS whitelist " is enabled ,,, you can refer to
http://www-12.lotus.com/ldd/doc/domino_notes/7.0/help7_admin.nsf/b3266a3c17f9bb7085256b870069c0a9/ddd27782cd22d4998525706f0065a46b?OpenDocument

3- On both the hub server and the SMTP server Console do the following :
Type the command of : sh server ,,,, then press the "Pause" button and check on the field of " Pending mail" the number because this number shows if the messages are queing in the mail server or not ,,, if the number of message is a big one (70,,90,,150) this means that the emails are not finding a way out from your email so what I recommend over here is to stop the mail router ( tell router q) then restart it ( load router ) then check if the number of emails is reducing or not !!!

4-You mentioned a very important thing about a " Firewall" and most of the times it is causes some problems .
So,,, Do the emails pass through this "firewall" ???is it a Mail Security firewall ???
Did you check if it is not blocking the emails ??? Are the emails quing inside it ???
You have to check this firewall because it is the frontend of the Mailing system .

5- I just forget to ask about the Anti virus .. Do you use a Lotus Notes Anti-virus ???? if so is it configured properly??

Best Wishes

this sounds like a connection record or domain document issue rather than DNS otherwise a NDR would be returned from the outbound gateway SMTP server.
Look at your address book and see how the system is routing mail to the gateway server.

The method I have used is to have a Foreign SMTP domain document that is called TheInternet and points to internet domains *.*
A connection record on the gateway server of type = SMTP, source = gateway server, destination domain = TheInternet, connection type = direct.
Make sure you have a connection record from your mail server to your outbound SMTP gateway server that uses NRPC.
All servers should see the connection record on gateway server and route mail to that server for onward routing.

If using this system, refresh or recreate the domain and connection records in case of curruption or some other error.

Hi,

After creating SMTP document  domain you have to check also the global domain document if your  Domino Directory contains multiple Global Domain documents

It turns out that our mother company (who bought us recently), built a test Domino environment over in their office, and took a live copy of our hub server and a mail server yesterday. They brought a contractor in an told her that the replica hub server was in a firewalled test environment. It wasn't... She edited a number of documents in the address book, which replicated to the live environment. The SMTP gateway config document was edited stopping all mail going outbound. After restoring Monday nights names.nsf file and overwriting the SMTP server's copy of the address book, and then replicating the old address book across to all servers, the issue was resolved.
