Question

Lotus Domino 8.5 Installation

Asked by: kavishn

Hi,

I have got a Lotus Domino server (release 8.0.2) on windows server 2003 enterprise. Our company just acquired lotus domino 8.5 and we have got both 32bit & 64 bit versions. I wish to move to the 64 bit version of lotus domino as windows server 2003 x64 can support larger than 4GB of RAM. I wish to install Lotus domino 8.5 on a brand new machine, create a new organizational unit, a new hub etc etc etc, but domain name we use to exchange emails will remain the same. I would like to know if i create a new OU, can i use the mail files (nsf) found on the domino 8.02 server of my existing users on the new server? WiIl i have to re-certify them? And what about the user ids? i know that server certifier will change, but what about the user ids that already exists?

Hi there kavishn,,,

For sure , when you create a new OU will have to create a certifierID ,,, Please refer to this link:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/domhelp/v8r0/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.help.domino.admin.doc/DOC/H_CREATING_AN_ORGANIZATIONAL_UNIT_CERTIFIER_ID_STEPS.html

Also you can have a look on these steps :
I highly recommend that you try these steps first on a testing environment with a dummy user
1- create  the new 8.5 Domino server
2- move the data from the 8.0.2 to the 8.5 server .
3- upgrade the template and the (ODS) of all the (.nsf)databases .
4-now lets say you have a  user (kavishn/OU/O) and you want to create a new OU so it will be (kavishn/OU/OU1/O) .
5-On the Domino Directory right click the user document of this user .
6- Select " Request to Move to a new Certifier".
7- Select the CertifierID of this user and server  and proceed... rember to access the Adminp(admin4.nsf) and click "Name Move Request" then click the button of "Complete Move for selected enteries",,, then on the domino console run the command of ( Tell Adminp p all)
8-On the domino administrator select the "Configuration Tab" then certification .
9-Click  " ID propertiest"
10-Select the user ID of the user (kavishn/OU/O) you have to know the password in order to access it or you can extract the default one from the user document then work on it ( change the name of the user on it from (kavishn/OU/O)to (kavishn/OU/OU1/O) )afterwards certify the user ID with the new OU certifier and then send it to the user and make him change his password and use it with the new OU added to the name ,,, note,, that if the name is not changed on the userID of the user he will not be able to access it so It should be exactly the same as it is mentioned on the "user document".
11-Now right click  the (nsf)database ,,,select (ACL:Access control list).
12-remove old name of user and add the new one with the new OU certiifer displayed on the name .

Now the user must be able to access it and work on it .
Sorry for this long proceedure ...

Best Wishes

That's a long procedure! First of all, the 8.02 server has ip address 192.168.0.100. What i'll do is fresh install domino 8.5 and use the same notes.ini file with same server id. I don't know if it will work. The only problem i think will be template, my clients are still on notes 6.5.

I see,,,,,,

So make sure to do the following ...

1- Copy all the (.id) files , (.nsf) files and the notes.ini file  from the 8.0.2 to the 8.5
2- make sure to add the IP address to the Host file (systemroot\system32\driver\etc.)
3-after making sure that all the above files are copied to the new server go the server console and run the following command (load convert -d -u mail\*.nsf * mail85.ntf) then after you make sure that the template was upgraded to mail85.ntf run the following command (load compact -c mail\*.nsf) to upgrade the ODS to ODS51

This way it must work

I am so sorry ,,, I forget to mention that after you copy all the data mentioned in the previous post to the 8.5 you can put the 8.0.2 down and use its hostname and IP 192.168.0.100 on the 8.5 server .

And you have to add the following parameter to the notes.ini (Create_R85_Databases = 1).

Hi,

i t means that if i install the 8.5 with ip address 192.168.0.200 and later on change the windows server ip to 192.168.0.100 after putting the 8.2 down, it wont cause any problem?

And yea there is another issue, emails are not being delivered directly to my domino server, emails are first received by a SCM which filter emails for spam, and then being relayed to the domino server. For outgoing emails its also the same thing, emails are then to the SCM. Yesterday i tried this command from teh console, "tell router quit" i then went to configuration, and modified the ROUTER/SMTP to an ip address 192.168.0.3 which is a backup scm server. I then typed "load router" and i could see from domino console that its still taking teh router as 192.168.0.16. I wonder why it didi that, maybe i had to quit the domino server and launch again?

If you can avoid in any way to create a new OU, do so. It's a lot of hassle, and what are the advantages you'd expect to get? Why exactly do you want the new OU? Or is it just a new name for the existing OU?

by: kavishnPosted on 2009-09-26 at 02:12:43ID: 25429262

No its not a new name, but what i want is a clean installation of everything but keep all user mail files and ids.

by: kavishnPosted on 2009-09-26 at 02:14:26ID: 25429266

akhafaf is there any mean of contact for you? email? phone?

by: sjef_bosmanPosted on 2009-09-26 at 02:31:03ID: 25429295

What you say is a contradiction of therms: a clean installation with old ids isn't possible. And it's a lot of work. You'll be recertifying ALL users, you have to be move mail databases to a different server, you have to change groups and the access to databases, and you have to take care that people who have encrypted mails can still read those mails (if you change their personal key).

Can you define what you consider "a clean installation"? It is not an option to shutdown the old server, move all data to the new one, and do an upgrade to R8.5? What do you want "cleaned"?

Just a warning: if you plan to continue your discussion outside this forum, that would be a violation of EE-Rules...

by: akhafafPosted on 2009-09-26 at 02:59:20ID: 25429354

First of all, I regret to tell you that continuing the discussion outside this forum is violating the EE-rules as mentioned

Second of all, as you mentioned >>>i t means that if i install the 8.5 with ip address 192.168.0.200 and later on change the windows server ip to 192.168.0.100 after putting the 8.2 down, it wont cause any problem? <<< there is no problem .or you have another option is to upgrade the 8.0.2 server to 8.5 first then move it to a new machine,,,
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=463&uid=swg21358469
Moreover, regarding >>SCM<< if it is configured to relay emails to 192.168.0.100 it will relay each and every email to it no matter what the machine holding this IP address is .

Finally, although I have provided you with the first proceedure of how to create a new OU and what to change but  I also recommend you not to do it because you have to apply all the 12 steps on each user document which will be a real though job.
