I need to know what directory the users names.nsf is saved to during a tape backup. It isnt included in the contents of the users mail.nsf .

The user's names.nsf is stored on the local hard drive, or when you have a network setup for your users, it's there, in the top-level data folder for Notes.

I need to know the location its stored in domino server not local pc. I need to restore a contacts list from a domino server  backup.
What sjef is correctly saying is that a users personal address book is only stored on the local machine unless roaming has been enabled for the users.

The server file names.nsf holds all of the user and server details not an individuals personal contact list.

If a user has a lotus Notes Client of the right version they could have enabled the syncronise contacts option in the replica page, in which case they will be stored in the users mail file under contacts.

As for exact paths, that would depend on your environments configuration, but names.nsf files are usually stoed in the root of the data folder on the server and also on a client workstation.
To find this folder on client or server, look for notes.ini and in the first few lines it will state "Directory="

Help us to help you, so if you have more information about what you are restoring and why we may be able to provide more info

Ok, I will get with IBM and publish the answer. As far as local...If I meant local I would have said lotus notes client. I said lotus domino which is my mail server nothing to do with where a users local names.nsf is stored. Lotus has had this option for years! It is the way we keep users web mail contacts in sync with their local copy! For years........this has been an option. My issue is domino does not! store a users contacts in the same directory as the mail file when restored you will not recover the contacts! this is saved in a different location.....of which was my original question....where?
Ok will try to help again now you have provided extra information that narrows out some of the vagaries of the question.

But some questions.
Are you refering to a user using Web Mail from a browser and not using a Lotus notes client software or other software ?

If it is accessed using a web browser using INotes functionality then the users list of cantacts are located in the users mail file. There is no seperate contact address book for a web user in default Lotus Domino setup.
Look in the mail file for a view called ($Contacts)

Otherwise need more info to be able to help.
As doninja says, there is no separate file for the contacts when using iNotes. If the user removed accidentally all his contacts, get the backup of the mail database, open it in Notes, and copy/paste all contacts back into the current mail database.

I will now close the question. The names.nsf is stored on the server as well as a local copy. The local copy is of no use when the hard drive for the users pc has failed! The names.nsf is in the mail file, but its a process to recover when the user has taged it for deletion. you must restore the database to an admin act first.
@sjef, sorry my mistake

@amports,
so it was a roaming profile user as per wuesten_fuchs comment
recommend points to post ID:35705800 as first mentioned roaming profile area which I believe was the solution provided by other source.
