Question

Can't send mail to aol.com

Asked by: robdijo

OK.  I had my ISP dp a PTR for mail.ffgnj.com.  The reverse DNS seems right now.  When any user emails aol.com we get a bounce back with error giving me a link to reverse dns problems and then the SMTP service says 421 - Service Not Available

Please help.

Are you sure you gave the correct IP address for your PTR record? Do you have a static IP address for that server?

Did you use the AOL tool to check to see if it can find the PTR record? http://postmaster.info.aol.com/tools/rdns.html

OriNetworks - I have a static IP and the correct PTR according to AOL.com.  I am stumped!!!  The dns change was done yesterday so does it take a few days?  If the aol site says that my ip points back to my mail server name shouldn't it work?

OK - thanks!!!  I sent an email to ipconfirm@mailtest.mx.aol.com.  That bounces back to you and gives you a wealth of information!  I have 2 public IP addresses on my router.  My mail record of 72.164.21.137 is set up correctly with DNS and PTR.  The problem was when the message comes back it lists my other IP that is used for web hosting at the HELLO prompt from the AOL server.  I set the mail server IP address as the primary and the web hosting IP address as the secondary (Public Range) on our T1 router and now we are great!!!!
