Browse All Topicsi have a new client that is running Mdaemon version 10. They are having a few issues sending and recieving emails.
there is retry queue which has some outgoing email sitting in there, some of it goes eventually. Also inbound when i try and do some telnet commands by connecting to there server externally it can takes ages for the mdaemon response to come up and when it does i cant use the normal ehlo command, It states 501 Invalid Characters detected. However when i do this internally i get a response straight away and can communicate with the SMTP service.
The site address is smtp.opac.co.nz.
I know a lot about Microsoft Exchange server but have never really used mdaemon before. If anyone has any advise it would be much appreciated.

Hello, Further investigation points to the mta.xtra.co.nz backup connection recieveing almost all of the email traffic and then that being sent onto the smtp.opac.co.nz server the fact that the mail is actually being accepted from the mta.xtra.co.nz could this be a security setting in mdaemon ? any help would be greatly appreciated.
Yes it was. I have disabled tarpitting and get the same results. It would appear as though something is putting a delay on the smtp communication and most mail servers are dropping the connection before the communication is being accepted. here is an extract from the logs

Try using different DNS servers to corroborate who the sender is. I recently had a bizarre problem of a broadly similar nature which was instantly rectified by using different DNS addresses. I think it's a bit strange to see the source of a message as being from messagelabs(?) What I think that log is showing is that the address the email is coming from does not match the reverse DNS for that address. Now assuming that most of your legit emails are coming from people whose mail servers are setup correctly then Mdaemon should tally up those two addresses with the aid of the DNS servers being used. If the results don't tally, Mdaemon should really be setup to drop the connection - and that is what is happening here. You could always go into the security settings and, in the Reverse Lookups section knock out this checking, but I would certainly not recommend it.
hi There,
I have tried the dns thing and ptr checking but still get the same issue. I have ran some tests with http://mxtoolbox.com/diagn
Has anyone seen anything similar ?

Could be that Mdaemon is setup with security features such as greylisting and/or tarpitting enabled. I did a test with DNSReport which gave results consistent with that kind of setup. A test to postmaster@... seemed to be handshaked promptly. One thing to look for is how much traffic is being received by the mta.xtra.co.nz backup server. I presume this is a store and forward service.
