The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. Postfix + Cyrus SASL MySQL

I've been banging my head against the desk for weeks on this one...

I'm trying to get Postfix set up to use Cyrus SASL to authenticate against MySQL on CentOS 5.3.  I'm also running Courier for IMAP and POP3 access.  These are authenticating against MySQL no problem, and Postfix works as long as I have SASL authentication disabled.

Although it's a little outdated (CentOS 5.1) I used this tutorial for most of the setup: http://www.howtoforge.com/virtual-users-and-domains-postfix-courier-mysql-centos5.1

I also took a look at this: https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-server-73/how-to-setup-mysql-and-saslauthd-with-postfix-centos-5.3-720383/

I couldn't get cyrus-sasl-sql to install using YUM because it had a dependency with an older version of MySQL, and when it tried to resolve that dependency I got all kinds of conflicts.  I ended up grabbing the source and rebuilding the RPM, which went OK (i.e. I didn't get any errors) and I was able to install the RPMs cyrus-sasl-lib, cyrus-sasl-devel, and cyrus-sasl-sql.

If I enable SASL authentication in Postfix and try to telnet localhost 25, it dies and I see this in my log file:

Jun  6 22:26:13 web01 postfix/master[4279]: warning: /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd: bad command startup -- throttling

I suspect it has something to do with the Cyrus SQL library not loading; if I do saslauthd -v SQL isn't listed:

[root@web01 ~]# saslauthd -v
saslauthd 2.1.22
authentication mechanisms: getpwent kerberos5 pam rimap shadow ldap

Can anyone shed any light on this?  Anyone run into this before?
