Question

POSTFIX - Configuring SMTP authentication for outgoing email

Asked by: PlazaProp

We use Nagios for network monitoring and it works great except for sending out emails to our email server.  The issue is that our email SMTP server (hosted by another company) requires SMTP authentication.  I was able to setup an SMTP relay on a Windows box and set postfix to relay mail to this box.  The delima is if the windows box goes down or if the relay service stops then I won't receive any of the Nagios email notifications.  What I would like to be able to do is configure postfix to send the mail directly to the SMTP server and provide the necessary  authentication.  How can I do this?  Do I need to modify postfix?  I don't see a way to add authentication information in Nagios and I don't think that there is from what I can tell by the Nagios documentation.

The Linux OS is Cento5.  Postfix, send mail, procmail and Cyrus were all installed by the default install.  I assume that postfix is configured with cyrus in mind but I don't know.

mwecomputers, that information sounds like it is related to setting up postfix to accept incomming connections from external clients and requiring smtp authentication.  Doesnt' look like it has provisions for sending out email with an account name and password to my POP email provider.  Am I mistaken?

This might be the solution you're looking for then. I don't know if the relay host portion will work against POP or IMAP logins.

I followed the instructions in the first link and here is the output of the log:

Sep 23 15:53:21 nms01 postfix/smtp[27656]: 493F8195817: to=<netop@plazaproperties.com>, relay=smtp.plazaproperties.com[64.26.60.224]:25, delay=11, delays=9.7/0.06/0.93/0, dsn=4.7.0, status=deferred (SASL authentication failed; cannot authenticate to server smtp.plazaproperties.com[64.26.60.224]: no mechanism available)

I get this in the mailq:
-Queue ID- --Size-- ----Arrival Time---- -Sender/Recipient-------
493F8195817      320 Wed Sep 23 15:53:10  netop@plazaproperties.com
(SASL authentication failed; cannot authenticate to server smtp.plazaproperties.com[64.26.60.224]: no mechanism available)
                                         netop@plazaproperties.com

Postfix is getting the correct IP of the mail server but now how to get it to authenticate. Any ideas?

Try adding your ISPs mailhost to debug_peer_list and increasing the debug_peer_level to 3, then restart postfix.

postconf -e debug_peer_list=mail.host.com
postconf -e debug_peer_level=3
postfix reload

This should increase what's logged for the smtp auth transaction

(man 5 postconf will tell you everything you ever wanted to know)

Ok, the debuging didn't help but I went back to the code to double check some things.  I had SMTP in place of MAIL.  changed those settings, restarted postfix and now it works from the command line.  Now have to test if emails from Nagios go out.
