Urgent: MS Exchange 2003 and Windows 2003 SP2

Hi, I just completely reinstall my small windows domain (three servers) and installed a fresh copy of Exchange 2003 with all the default values, but some services (such as SMTP) won't start. I am desperate to have it working.

I started with a setup /reinstall procedure of Exchange without any luck. I will try to follow more instructions glanced here and there on the web. Has anyone got a way out of that problem? My email server has been down for more than a day now. Please help!

The windows 2003 server is running with all the latest patches from Microsoft (service pack 2) and the server used for the installation was a clean new server.
