mail server software and spam

a client has a homework assignment.  they want me to set up mail server that has option NOT to filter spam.  

they have researched many ISPs and state that they all filter spam on the server side

they feel they want to set up their own mail server because then they can see what happens when they do not filter anything

silly tho it sounds, this is part of their research project.

need:  is their some free mail server software that could do the job??  in other words, NOT filter??

i have set up web server and ftp server never a mail server, what's a good place to start learning how

Postfix defaults to no filtering, but filters can be added later on
Same with sendmail

These are both on a linux machine though... but both free

What operating system are you using? There is many different ways of doing that - if you specify, I can send you some URLs

we haven't decided what O/S to use.  as this is for a homework project I doubt if my client wants to invest in a Windows Server product, but she does have thinkpads with XPP laying around.

My gut reaction was "sendmail on linux", but if she has a thinkpad with XP laying around, try JAMES, it's a java based MTA and will run on any operating system with a java runtime environment installed.

I'm sure there isn't much if any spam protection configured by default, but you'll/she'll have to look into the config.

you all lose - i easily found an ISP who will take off spam filtering on a per-person basis.  thanks anyway guys.

You didn't ask about ISPs, you asked about software:
