Question

PDF attachments stripped from email - doesn't make sense

Asked by: tom_szabo

Hi All,
A client of us sending invoices and statements from their accounting package and suddenly 30-40 of say 100 recepients will not receive the attached PDF.
The PDF is sent by the server (Exchange 2000) and not received on the other end.
We have done a number of tests and this is what we know:
The email certainly sent or attempted to br sent from the sender with the PDF. The same email CC-ed to another client or to us will arrive fine.
If we forward that same email , it will arrive with the attached PDF.
We have tryid to use a mail-forwarder, the ISPs mail server, but still the same. the email arrives, no PDF .

the system was working properly

May be the recipient might have put new Rules in their SPAM filtering , so that attachments are being removed.
Try to send the same PDF from GMAIL to that domain, is it getting delivered?

Well, I think I made it clear .. I guess not clear enough so here it goes:
a particular email  sent to Client A and CC-ed to my mailbox (different domain, different server, different location and IP) Client A receives the email without attachment and I will have it with attachment.

If I than forward the email to Client A (the same email that has the attachment and was CC-ed to me) the client receives the email with the attachment fine

>a particular email  sent to Client A and CC-ed to my mailbox (different domain, different server, different location and IP) Client A receives the email without attachment and I will have it with attachment.

In the above statement, the person sending the email, is he/she on the same server as you are?
What version of Outlook client is Client A using?
Does the attachment appear when viewing from OWA?

>> (different domain, different server, different location and IP)  >> so NO, we are different business, no link between our operations

What version of Outlook client is Client A using?
What version of Outlook are you using?
Are the emails being sent by some application?
Does the attachment appear when viewing from OWA?
From the question, sender is using Exchange 2000.
So, What version of Exchange are you using and What version of Exchange is Client A using?

They appear to have different setups, we dont know all of them, but we are talking about 30-40 different companies

Might be a problem with antivirus software that checks incoming mail. If say 30% of your clients use one particular brand of AV and they all upgraded at approximately the same time (not unlikely; virus dtabases etc are upgraded very often) and the upgrade broke something, you'd have your present situation.

If these users (the ones that don't get the attachment) have some kind of antispam software running, that relies on an external party (blacklists, external filtering hosts etc), you could have the same situation.

You might want to talk to one of these recipients and have their IT check the mail server logs for any trace of your attachments. Sounds like the problem is at the receiving end(s).
