Question

SMTP Server that does not use SSL

Asked by: stevid

Hi,

I am using IP Cameras that can be configured to send e-mails under various circumstances,

The problem i am having is every SMTP Server i try to use requires SSL Authentification and the cameras can not support SSL Authentification,

Does anybody know an SMTP Server that does not require Authentification that i can use with my Mobotix IP Camera,

Thanks,

Stephen

You should be able to use the mail servers provided by your ISP without authentication.

Can your cameras access the Internet? If not, so you have an exchange server on your site that you can configure? you may be able to set up relaying rights so the exchange server will allow the cameras to submit mail.

Hi, Yes the cameras can access the internet no problem , I have the default Gateway, DNS etc entered,

I have tried GMail, Yahoo etc but no luck so far, Any more ideas of mail clients to try.

The issue is to do with the fact the cameras can not support SSL Authentication,

Thanks

Yes, ask your ISP what mail servers they provide for your use. They will normally be able to give you a server to use for SMTP without authentication.

Who is your ISP?

if the cameras are on your own network, run your *own* mail server. if they aren't on your network, but do have a fixed IP address, then do that too, you can specify which email addresses you accept mail from (or just specify to accept only to a specific domain, and send all email to that domain)

@DaveHowe I'm not sure I fully follow what you are suggesting? Surely if stevid just wants a service he can use to send mail outbound it would be much easier for him to use an existing SMTP service provided by the ISP for that purpose rather than configure and manage his own SMTP service?

Stevid, Of course if you already have a mail server on your network that you can configure to accept mail without authentication (internally only of course) then all the better but I think your ISP mail facility should be sufficient for your use.

Mdaemon has a free version of their mail server which is easy to setup and would work in this scenario.  You only need configure one mailbox for all the cameras: the cameras point to mdaemon; when messages arrive there they can be forwarded on to wherever you like by conventional means, also you have the ability to access the Mdaemon message store remotely by means of POP, IMAP or their Webmail (Worldclient).

Shauncroucher: I am assuming his isp doesn't offer one - many don't, but suggest instead you use yahoo or some similar provider.

really though, gmail will happily accept unauthenticated mail - provided it is to a gmail address.

never been that fond of mdemon, for some reason - prefer exim, or, on windows, mercury.

yes, I agree there's lots of different ways to do these things

If his ISP doesn't provide an SMTP service and he doesn't have an existing mail server then yes, a simple mail system on one of his servers would be fine I guess.

Perhaps if you have windows OS, just use SMTP server that comes with IIS, it will work just as well as any other.

shauncroucher: agreed, although that only comes with server operating systems - winxp (for example) doesn't have it.

Hi All,

Thanks for all the replys,

First off the cameras are not on an internal network, They are on an external network that does not have any servers associated with it,

Really i want to use a SMTP Server that is already in place such as Gmail, Yahoo etc????

Thanks,

Stephen

that should still work - gmail, yahoo all accept mail unencrypted and unauthenticated *if and only if* it is addressed to one of their own users - so gmail accepts for gmail accounts, yahoo for yahoo accounts.

by: shauncroucherPosted on 2009-06-16 at 01:31:49ID: 24635905

I agree with DaveHowe, if your ISP do not provide an unauthenticated SMTP service then using gmail or yahoo is your next best option.

Hi

Tried using Gmail sending to a gmail address but still no luck,

Ill keep trying and let you know,

Thanks,

For the SMTP server use: gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com

The cameras MUST send with a @gmail.com domain and the emails MUST be send to @gmail.com email address.

This will work, but only if you can specify the FROM and TO to be @gmail.com

by: stevidPosted on 2009-06-16 at 06:18:05ID: 24637598

Cool, It works,

Can you please tell me me why this works and the standard smtp.gmail.com does not work???

Thanks,

Stephen

by: shauncroucherPosted on 2009-06-16 at 06:34:16ID: 24637766

Yes,

smtp.gmail.com requires a TLS (Transport Layer Security) connection in order to send mail.

I carried out a DNS lookup to find the servers that receive mail for gmail.com and they cannot impose this level of security because little mail would get through.

so you have the solution now yes?

Shaun

Yes well i have a solution that is close as i want,

I would prefer to not send to a Gmail address but its ok,

Thanks for all your help,
