Question

Need minimum send an email from shell script command

Asked by: cimmer

Ive setup a MYSQL server that has nothing on it but MYSQL. I need to create a bash script that sends out a simple notification email when certain events happen.

My question is:
On a slim version of Ubuntu LTS, what can i do to install a small bin file or small service that does nothing more than send out a real simple email by typing the generic/common "mail" command ?? I dont need the server to receive mail, only send mail as its only going to send a small number of emails to my address.

I guess the generic mail or mailx ? I just don't know if this will really send out SMTP mail without the assistance of an MTA like sendmail. Alternatively, just script one using a perl CPAN module like Email::Send::SMTP ? Or does your server also not have perl? ;)

by: cimmerPosted on 2009-08-10 at 13:22:19ID: 25063682

the server does have perl due to some mysql monitoring scripts.  I know php and bash scripting but im not too familiar with perl but i do know how to install perl modules...

How would you go about sending an email using "Email::Send::SMTP" ?  Do you have any examples?

Here's a script that uses Mail::Sender rather (it has no dependencies on other modules).
It works by taking standard input as the mail message that you want to send, and assumes that you can set the sender, recipient and subject in advance.

So you would use it something like this (assuming you call the script mailer.pl):

echo "Hello There" | ./mailer.pl

#!/usr/bin/perl

use Mail::Sender;

$smtphost = '192.168.29.80';
$from     = 'sender@somedomain.com';
$to       = 'recipient@somedomain.com';
$subject  = "Some Subject";

$msg = "";
while (<>) {
  $msg .= $_;
}

$mailer = new Mail::Sender {
            smtp => $smtphost,
            from => $from,
            to   => $to
          };

$mailer->MailMsg({
                 to => $to,
                 subject => $subject,
                 msg=> $msg
                });

Incidentally, this perl module is also good for sending messages with file attachments in case that is your need.

I'm sure you server as the "mail" command on it. Use that for sending out email:

# cat /path/to/body/of/email | /bin/mail -s "subject here" recipient@somedomain.com

This will cause the contents of the /path/to/body/of/email file to be emailed out. You can also use "echo" instead:

# echo "this string will be in the body of the email" | /bin/mail -s "subject here" recipient@somedomain.com

It's a piece of cake to script in bash to:

#!/bin/sh
SUB="subject here"
TO="you@yourdomain.com"
BODY="Body here"

echo $BODY | /bin/mail -s $SUB $TO

after setting up some other servers as well, I realized our "web" servers will need to send out email via php so i guess my question goes back to the original question now as i dont want to use perl....

What can i do to install a small bin file or small service that does nothing more than send out a real simple email by typing the generic/common "mail" command ?? I dont need to receive mail at all only send (mostly for just notifications and/or alerts.  Can I just do an "apt-get MAILSERVICE" ? I want something slim that sends only. I dont need any listening service.

PHP has function for natively sending mail through the mail() function. You set the SMTP server to use in php.ini. If you need to have PHP on your server, you might as well also load the php-cli package which then allows you to call the PHP mail function from a script too.

So, from a shell file:

#!/bin/bash

php myphpcodefilethatmailsstuff.php

You can install php-cli with apt-get install php-cli

maybe im not being clear...

There is no /bin/mail on the server or in any of the other /bin/ directories.

My question is... using something like you mention "apt-get install"... What can I install that is simple and low in resources that would give me a /bin/mail or similar.

All I need to be able to do is send out. I dont need to receive nor do I need any services installed that will be listening for anything.

Hi,

You can install mailx using the command:

sudo apt-get install mailx

then you can call it in a script:

echo " Here's the Mail Body" | mailx -s "Subject" "receiver@domain.com"  -a "From:you<yourmail@example.com>"

Replace "Here's the Mail Body", "Subject", " "receiver@domain.com" and apparent sender "From:you<yourmail@example.com>"  as you wish.

If you don't want to use a local mailer you can use ssmtp package instead:
sudo apt-get install ssmtp

will help yu get and install the package. For configuration see the /etc/ssmtp.conf

Cheers,
K.

When I told "local mailer" I meant an MTA (Mail Transfer Agent) like postfix. ssmtp will save you to install and configure a local MTA then it will direct the outgoing mail to an SMTP server.
