mail bounce back 550-No Such User Here

Hi all.

I have a mail problem.
Please can someone help me.

The problem only occurs when sending mail from mail boxes on amethysthomes.co.uk to 2 other domains: shorcoelectrical.co.uk and absolutecivilengineering.co.uk
When sending from other mail like gmail it works correctly.


When either of them send mail to each other they get a bounce back. e.g:
example@amethysthomes.co.uk sends to example@shorcoelectrical.co.uk
or
example@shorcoelectrical.co.uk sends to example@amethysthomes.co.uk


I have tested by emailing someone@shorcoelectrical.co.uk from my gmail and he replied back (so I know the email is correctly spelled).
I have logged into the online outlook web app for example@amethysthomes.co.uk, wrote a new email and pasted exactly the correct email address in the send to but it still doesn't work (so i know its not a client side program setting problem. like outlook SMTP settings).

Both of those domains are hosted by the same outfit - something called websitewelcome.com. Looks like it is Hostgator's reseller account DNS servers, they probably don't even know their email is in the USA!

It looks like they are using a call back method of anti spam protection, which is where the server you are sending to attempts to make a connection back to your server to verify the sender exists.

It was a flawed approach from the start and very unreliable and I think only EXIM still does it. I know that 123-reg.co.uk tried to implement it at one point and dropped it very quickly due to complaints.

Not a lot you can do about it unfortunately. As this is a reseller system their "host" (who isn't really their host) will have no control over the configuration at all.
You could try enabling recipient filtering so that the correct results go back, but Exchange will use a tar pit so that may not provide the result you are looking for.
You could also try routing email via a smart host (your ISP for example). Ultimately changing mail servers for them is going to be the only option.

Please can you tell me in a very easy to understand way, why the problem is only occuring when sending from emails on the amethysthomes domain and not from other email services like gmail.

i have been asked why this is and i cant put together a response from what i have learnt so far from the answers to this question.

It is because of the way Exchange reacts to the call back.
Gmail isn't Exchange, it is a completely different SMTP server stack that can obviously cope or the server has been configured to accept email from the major providers. There can be any number of reasons why email from a major provider will work - as the email server configuration cannot be seen you have no way of knowing.

The error is from the sending side and means that the server does not think the account exists.  Go raise Cain with your webhost and make them fix it!

The company i work for hosts the amethyst homes website and we have control over the DNS from our plesk panel.

The mail is then sent to an external mail server so i have set the DNS to talk to the external mail server.

i have opened a ticket with the email hosting provider (sending them the same 2 bounce backs as the question here.)

This is how they have responded so far:

We have escalated the case to our Engineers and found out that the issue lies with the server of the shorcoelectrical.co.uk  domain name. If they are using an Outlook software to send out messages, they might want clear the autocomplete cache.

This is reason why they have to contact as well the mail server provider and ask about the meaning of the bounce back message. They can check with the mails server if your domain/ mailbox was somehow blocked by their server.

That reverse dns is only a warning but not really affecting it. On the other hand, upon checking on the bounce back error message, the issue actually lies on the other provider where example@shorcoelectrical.co.uk is hosted. The email provider to where example@shorcoelectrical.co.uk  is not permitting Fasthosts to send emails to them specifically in their server and as per checked on this link http://geniustechblog.com/sender-verification/. Please be advised to add your email address as a whitelist email address in the recipient's inbox and should test it again.

The 550 error means that the SENDING server could not authenticate the sender and refused to send the message.  When it never gets sent, you can't blame the recipient, can you?
