Email not deliverable - "This is the qmail - send program. I'm afraid I was not able to deliver..."

Hi,

We are having trouble receiving e-mail form a certain mailserver. Our e-mail works fine with all other mailservers.

When our client attempts to e-mail us, he gets the following message back from his mailserver after 24 hours:

This is the qmail - send program.
I'm afraid I was not able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

<***@***.co.za>
Connected to 196.***.**.***.** but connection died. (#4.4.2)
I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long.

1. We run our own DNS; it's working fine, we don't have this problem with any other client
2. The behaviour is erratic, some days we receive his mail, other days it fails
3. Have elliminated all spam filtering etc. to be the problem on our side

My Question:

Can anyone please point out what could be causing this, taking into account my 3 points above, and how to go about correcting the problem if at all possible?
