Question

Setup GoDaddy dedicated server to use Gmail as outgoing SMTP for portion of client domains

Asked by: matt1237

I am using a dedicated Fedora Linux server at GoDaddy and am using Plesk 9.  I have a number of clients that use gmail.  I want ALL server generated email to be sent through gmail just for these domains.  HOW can I do this?

Here is what I *think* I understand so far...

Sendmail (server generated email uses this) can be configured to send mail through ONE source (I don't think it's possible to do more than one like I need) by setting the following:

### From the file /etc/mail/sendmail.mc
define(`SMART_HOST', `smtp-address-for-gmail.com')dnl

Qmail (can server generated emails use this?) can be configured to send mail through other MANY sources on a per domain basis as follows (is my syntax correct?):

### Contents of the file "/var/qmail/control/smtproutes"
localdomain1.com:smtp-address-for-gmail.com
localdomain2.com:smtp-address-for-gmail.com
localdomain3:k2smtpout.secureserver.net
localdomain4:k2smtpout.secureserver.net
localdomain5:k2smtpout.secureserver.net

### GoDaddy's default contents of the file "/var/qmail/control/smtproutes"
:k2smtpout.secureserver.net

I don't understand what you meant by this above statement.  Here more info if it helps...

I am using Plesk to manage multiple domains hosted on my dedicated server.  One such domain is for example, we-sell-flowers-for-a-living.com.  This domain was purchased from GoDaddy is pointing to my DNS server on this dedicated machine.  This domain resolves to anyone externally and to the website set up for it on this machine.  This website has some forms that visitors can fill out like the "Contact Us" form.  This form will send a server-generated email directly to the owner of the website using sendmail (I think).  I am having trouble with these emails silently failing and want to fix this by using gmail as my SMTP to ensure email gets through if I'm blacklisted or I don't have my SPF set up correctly.  Obviously I can't use gmail as my outgoing SMTP for clients that aren't using gmail.  That is why I need help... it appears that sendmail cannot selectively choose the outgoing SMTP server.

but using gmail.com as smtp host requires smtp authentication.
Maybe it's Your "Contact Us" form should use gmail.com as smtp directly. There's lot of classes/code on the internet to send mail with smtp from php.
The most popular is the phpmailer i think?

I'm still unsure what is the desired behavior.

It's not a part of control/locals or control/virtualdomains

OK... I know I'm "johnny come lately" to this topic, but I think I might be able to shed some light...

First of all, let's remember that SendMail & QMail are MTAs -- in the GRAND SCHEME of e-mail, users write messages into MUAs (like Outlook), which then connect to an MTA (like QMail), which moves the message to (or actually, towards... but in today's Internet there is usually only 1 hop) another MTA (based on the domain name in the TO portion of the message), where it awaits a "pickup" from the recipient's MUA (Thunderbird anyone?)

So the statement that your server sends mail using SendMail, but other mail is handled by QMail doesn't seem right. What's PROBABLY happening is that QMail is running, and there is a /usr/bin/sendmail PROGRAM out there that is actually part of QMail (that is, it directs the locally generated e-mail messages into qmail-inject).

Now, just to make sure, we're going to forward the ENTIRE DOMAIN's EMAIL to some other server, right? (If you're talking about forwarding just a couple of users, then you need to have separate (other domain name) addresses for them).

So, as I just wrote in another thread 2-days ago, what you want to do is in 3 steps:

1) Ensure that localdomain1.com is NOT listed in your control/locals, NOR is it listed in control/virtualdomains (BOTH of these files define LOCAL domains, they just handle them differently)

2) Ensure that localdomain1.com IS listed in your control/rcpthosts file. This file lists the domains for which your QMail server will accept mail for (and process in any way other than a pure RELAY).

3) Make an appropriate entry in your control/smtproutes file to force delivery to another server (thus, overriding the DNS MX records). NOTE: the appropriate entry here CAN have SMTP login information included:

   localdomain.com:mail.gmail.com:587:gmailuser:gmailpassword

I hope this helps!

Dan
