Question

How to setup QMAIL with sieve rules?

Asked by: akosb

I would like to install the Sieve rules on my server with Qmail, but I can't really find any useful info after googling it.
I have a Debian server, installed with PLESK, running Qmail.
Would appreciate if anyone could either point me to an appropriate tutorial, or write me a short one on installing this.

Do you use maildrop, spamassasin, or any other filtering process with your qmail setup?

Have a look at http://www.lifewithqmail.org http://www.qmail.org

Which version of plesk do you have?
http://download1.parallels.com/Plesk/PPP9/Doc/en-US/plesk-9.2-email-users-guide/

http://www.koansys.com/tech/sieve-server-side-mail-filtering-with-postfix-dovecot
One way is to alter the default delivery from what you have now, to the example in the postfix setup.
I have not looked at whether you can use the default delivery as '/usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver
'
i.e. qmail-local will pass the message to '/usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver' for delivery to the mailbox.

Thanks!

I use PLESK 9.2. Do you recommend switching to postfix, since PLESK 9 supports postfix?
I use SpamAssassin, through 4PSA's SpamGuardian. I just asked them if their product supports PLESK installation with postfix as well.
Would filtering have an impact on SpamAssassin's functionality by your opinion?

Thank you.

It is completely up to you which mail server to use.

Here is the consideration.
Sieve is a set of instruction you can setup to process the final delivery of emails.
Spamassasin is a filtering mechanism that depending on your setup either analyzes the message in the SMTP transaction phase or in the process of final delivery.

Spamassassin is part of a filtering mechanism/process.

The two or multiple anti-spam/anti-virus mechanisms can co-exist.
http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Sieve
Deals with adding a Sieve rule dealing with a mailing marked by spamassassin as spam.

Thanks arnold!

I read a bit after this as well.
What makes me wonder is, would I need to replace my Courier IMAP with dovecot to be able to run sieve filters?

by: arnoldPosted on 2009-07-31 at 07:33:42ID: 24989119

No.
These are separate processes. I think courier also has a mail filtering maildrop, you would need to have some components of dovecot installed to get the deliver executable and its libraries on the system. You may have to install the entire package.  But it in no way forces you to start using one versus the other.
Courier IMAP does not handle incoming messages to you.  You may have set it up so that you can send outgoing messages through the IMAP connection i.e. within Courier-IMAP save an outgoing message in the outbox folder.

It is completely up to you.  With the installation of dovecot to get access to the sieve process, you do not seem concerned that you would be forced to switch to using dovecot. But you will have two email server packages installed.  It is your choice on which to use at which stage of the email process.

Note of caution, double check in a test environment whether the passing of data from qmail-local to dovecot's deliver works as intended.

So, as I get from this:
- I use Courier IMAP to connect to my IMAP folders from Outlook or other client, to receive and send messages
- I can install devcot next to it, to which I won't connect, but with proper settings, it would handle filtering mail through siege?

by: arnoldPosted on 2009-08-03 at 08:13:32ID: 25005092

Yes, dovecote/deliver if setup correctly and works as intended, will perform the filtering intepreting the siege rules at the time of local delivery to the end user.

Hi there,

sorry for the delay. In the end I went with tuning postfix for filtering mail which worked out after some struggle. Anyhow, I appreciate your help in explaining what is responsible for what, and installing dovecot could be also a solution.
