Migrating Sendmail to Exchange 2K

I Have an Exchange 2000 server which has been recently setup to replace Sendmail system. The sendmail system version 8.10.2 resides on a Solaris machine running 2.7. I would like to migrate from the Solaris environment to exchange and move all the users mailboxes and also the unread mail held in these mailboxes. Any Ideas ?

tell your boss exchange sucks and to embrace a open source solution.  Dump the solaris and set up a nice RedHat linux machine.

Well, I have to agree that it is a bit silly...  but I'll try to help.  I searched online for some resources on this.  There are endless sites/docs that explain migrating FROM exchange TO sendmail...  but I only found *1* article in my search that helped to migrate FROM sendmail TO exchange.

My suggestion would be to use sendmail or postfix or similar as the bastion "outside" email exchanger/gateway...  and use Exchange as your internal email server.  This would provide all the nifty exchange features for company users, while leaving a far more secure and stable server (sendmail/postfix/etc) exposed on the internet to exchange mail to & from other outside domains.

So far as I know the only way to transfer unread mail from the Solaris system to Exchange, at the server level, is to install an IMAP connector on Exchange and to install an IMAP server on Solaris. Then you can use any of the IMAP<->IMAP Perl scripts. You will have to have in your possession the plain test password of every user on the Solaris system and their Exchange password, but if the Solaris system is to be decommissioned you could (for the purposes of the copy) set all the passwords to a known value.

You didn't say how users access their mail now. If it is via POP it can also be done at the client level. You do:

1) Shut down sendmail on Solaris so no new mail can be received.
2) Have each and every user read their mail (which will download the messages to the user's client)
3) Setup that client on the user's machine to connect to Exchange.
4) Move the messages from the client's local INBOX to Exchange.

Note that if the user's aren't all already using Outlook you'll have to install an IMAP connector on Exchange to be able to upload a users messages from their local machine to Exchange.
