Get Sendmail to send out really fast

How can I configure sendmail to send out message as fast as possible?

I am emailing my web members from a perl script and the members are going to greatly increase and I would like to be able to email them as fast as possible. They get to choose a window of time when they would like to be emailed and if I can not send out email fast enough, those windows of time will start to over lap.

I have seen posts of 21 email/sec but I only seem to get ~1-2 email/sec and it is a dual xeon box with 3 GB of memory.
