How to configure an apache server in debian to send mails with php

I don't know too much about administrating linux, but I have a webpage using "mail" commands in php and a Debian server with that webpage running. How I can setup and configure the mail() command to get outgoing mail.

The server has an static IP and a domain configured. I ssh and ftp access only to the machine. Already the only thing I tried is to install sendmail using apt-get.
