Unexpected connection response from server
I am getting an undeliverable message when seding email to certain domains that reads "Delivery failed after 20 attempts.  Unexpected connection response from server".  I am behind a Barracuda spam filter but that should just be checking inbound emails and all the mail server information seems to be set up correctly since I don't have a problem with all the emails, just a select few.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hmmm.  Can you also post the body of the undeliverable?  Is it any more explanatory?

You might want to telnet to the the domain SMTP port in question and issue the commands manually to see if the response from the server is the same.

05.09.2008 at 08:24AM PDT, ID: 21533809
The body of the undeliverable has no other usefull information.

What manual commands should I use??

05.09.2008 at 09:12AM PDT, ID: 21534297
I'll get that for you but in the meantime, go to :

http://www.mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx

put your sending server IP address in and let's make sure that you aren't blacklisted.

05.09.2008 at 09:17AM PDT, ID: 21534340
Some notes:
1) after the ehlo, you will get a response about valid connection info from the other mail server
2) the word "data" below is exact -- not a free form field
3) the phrase "testing outbound mail" is free form.  put any text that you want here.  when you finish your message, a "." on a line by itself tells the MTA that the message is complete.
4) let me know the results of this test and the results of the RBL check.

telnet 208.118.72.70 25

I checked the Blacklist and everything came back clean except for these 4 timed out but i don't believe it's a problem.

I couldn't establish a connection to 208.11.72.70 please see below:

H:\>telnet 208.118.72.70 25
Connecting To 208.118.72.70...Could not open connection to the host, on port 25:
 Connect failed

H:\>telnet 208.118.72.70

 Connect failed

05.09.2008 at 12:52PM PDT, ID: 21535943
It's port 25 (not port 23) and it works for me.

Test with other locations (telnet IP.OF.MAIL.SERVER 25).  If it works, then:

1) the remote end is blocking your IP address space
2) your own end is blocking that outbound SMTP connection.

05.09.2008 at 01:05PM PDT, ID: 21536035
It looks like the telnet test doesn't work (possibly because of my firewall?) because every mail server I test gives me the same message even though we don't have a problem sending emails to those domains.  Is there anything else I can test???

05.09.2008 at 01:08PM PDT, ID: 21536057
Are you testing it from the mail server that is would normally perform the outbound connection?  This is where the testing needs to be done.

05.09.2008 at 01:23PM PDT, ID: 21536175
Sorry, my mistake.  When I run the telnet command on the mail server with a known good mail server it works however when I try using the 208.118.72.70 IP address nothing happens - the screen goes blank.  So does this mean the remote end is blocking my connection?  And if so, why?

05.09.2008 at 01:30PM PDT, ID: 21536221
From an analytical perspective, it could be your end or their end.

If you check with your network people and it's not your end, you would need to call the other end and ask why you are being blocked.

Bear in mind that the server admin group may not be blocking your IP(s).  It may be on their network side.
