Question

Exchange 2003 does not start after reboot

Asked by: webprouk

We have recenltly added a Windows 2003 Server R2 domain controller to our network. We just restarted out exchange 2003 server and the Exchange Service will not start.

The error messages seem to point to some flaw in the active directory. We have more than one domain controller so it would appear unlikely that the active directory is corrupt.

Do we need to run adprep on all the domain controllers? Is there anything we can do to diagnose the problem.

suggestions please!!

Did you run adprep /forestprep from Windows 2003 R2 CD2 to extend the schema?

I recommend you do that in your Schema Master node.

Here is how you do that:

http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/ed42abd5-24c7-4b5a-8165-dbd96727ec841033.mspx?mfr=true

Make sure that the user who is being used to extend the Schema is a member of the Schema Admins group.

After that, it may be a very good idea to demote your R2 server and promote it again.

Checking DNS is king here too, as our fellow said. Its VERY common to see bad DNS configuration. Use netdiag and dcdiag (you must install support tools from the support folder of your Windows media).

Thanks for your help.

This problem was very complex and was only solved by MS Business Critical Support, over the course of a 4 hr support call, where they used remote access to solve the problem, with input from members of both the Exchange team and the Active Directory Team.

Not sure how to allocate points or close the question.

The problem was that the active directory had its records for the GAC mixed. We had moved the GAC to another computer however it thought that it was still on its original. After re-populating every thing it all works fine.
