Disabled Active Directory Accounts - Mail Forwarding

environment 2000 Active Directory -- Exchange 2000

When someones leaves our organization, we ask their dept manager if they would like their email forwarded to them for 30 days.
So its my understanding that if we want to forward that users email, their active directory account cannot be disabled correct?

a disabled active directory account cannot receive email eventhough their mailbox is still on the exchange server?
