You may also try domainname\username and check whether you are able to add the user

I have a Windows 2003 server which has Active directory and exchange 2007 installed for testing purpose.The exchange has been installed successfully.Now i added a client machine to the domain and i am able to login as the Domain administrator into the New Domain.I am trying to add a user as administrator to the Administrator group but when try adding i am not able to see the new Domain name.Only the local machine name is present.
Any way to troubleshoot this problem.
I tried pinging have the DNS set correctly and even removed and added the client to the Domain but same problem.

So, you are trying to add a user to the administrators group. If you do not see the domain user's credentials, that means you have not logged on as that user and created a profile for that user on the local computer.
You can do one of two things to resolve this issue:
You can manually create a user and manually enter the domain in Control Pannel>>Users and computers.
The best way is to log on as the domain user and let the PC create a profile for that user on the local machine. Then, you should see the domain user in control pannel>>Users and computers

Just reboot the system once and check.
