Browse All TopicsI have just installed WSUS 3.0 on a server and intend using this a my new patch deployement tool. Everything is installed fine except for the client side of things. The microsoft documentation talks about creating a GPO to configure the clients. It also describes it for people who have knowledge of GPO's (which I aint).
Current setup is Active Directory with two 2003 Domain controllers. Currently the only GPO in the domain is the default domain policy. How (in idiots guide) do I create a new GPO for WSUS without chaging or interfering with the default domain policy?

Do you have it on the default port (port 80) or an alternative port (port 8530)? Maybe a software firewall or some other sort of port blocking is preventing comms between clients and servers. If it is on the default port (port 80) then you shouldn't have too many problems unless downloading items is prohibited from an antivirus application or firewall settings.
I find many folks that are having problems with clients and set up the GPO settings also haven't set rules for their ISA firewall to allow WSUS.
I also found that clients need SP2 for XP clients, and SP4 for 2000 clients in order for WSUS to see them. So, they have to be up to a certain point for WSUS to work.
I have been working with another post where only a couple clients showed up. When running a WSUS client diagnostic tool, they came up with the 503 error on the client (overloaded NIC). The WSUS client diag tool will show a line in the text that says something like:
VerifyWUServerURL() failed with hr=0x801901f7
The proposed fix to this is:
"Check your registry (on the client machine) for a Binary value in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR
Settings\Connections that is called WinHttpSettings. If it exists,
delete it."
and I found that fix on this site:
http://www.wsus.info/forum
With all the research, above, let me give you my opinion:
If group policy is working on a couple machines, then you probably don't have a problem with group policy. The website you have set up is working for two clients and that GPO should work for all of the computers within the OU that the Group Policy is applied to.
Also WSUS is a website that manages a group of updates, patches and service packs. So, there is little to go wrong. But, WSUS has issues with a few settings, and other applications when the list of clients and servers don't fully populate in WSUS. Some other issues are:
1) Problems with the proxy:
http://www.eggheadcafe.com
2) Network load balancing over a switched network, or other Dual NIC conflicts resulting in Overloaded NICS:
(If you think overloaded NICS may be your issue, Please advise for additional information)
3) Problems with Imaged machines:
http://support.microsoft.c
Wrong port configurations for the WSUS website:
default port is port 80 and an alternative port is port 8350.
I hope this information helps you. If not, let me know and I will try to further assist.
