How do I know the role of DC's in our network

We have 2 domain controllers. I understand one is a primary and the other is a secondary one.

How do I know the roles played by these two domain controllers.

Also, I need to install updates on them. So which DC shall I reboot first so that I can ensure that the domain is still up and my exchange doesnt get affected.

Use this command line tools "netdom query fsmo" , the netdom tool is part of Windows Resource Tool Kit

Sorry, forgot to answer the other part. Doesn't matter which server you do the upgrade but I would do it on the secondary first.

Run a full backup and system state data backup first.

Just to be more specific :

Server 1 : Has Domain Namin Master & Schema Master Role
Server 2 : PDC Emulator , RID & Infrastructure Master

Which server shall I reboot first.

If I reboot the server will it cause FSMO roles to be transferred over to the other server ?

How will it affect the exchange server & User Mail ?

How will it affect the users from login to the domain ?
