Logon failure error message when connecting via vpn

We have clients who connect to our network via vpn.  Recently when they have tried to map to a certain drive they get the following message, "Logon Failure: The target account is incorrect."    They have no problem being authenticated when they login via vpn.  The are able to get their e-mail using microsoft outlook.  They can ping the server by ip address and by name.  But they cannot map.    What do tyou think is wrong here and what can we do.
