How do I replace a 2003 sp 2 domain controller with 2008 domian controller

We have a dc that has experienced a fan failure, rather than replace the fan, we have purchased a new server.  We want to install Windows 2008 standard on the new server, but want it at the end to have the same name as the old dc which was running Windows 2003 sp2.

Question, I have reviewed the steps to do a system state restore, and seize the roles, but will this process work when the operating system changes?
