This is a great site for help and my first post. Please bear with me as I'm a newbie network administrator and this issue is really scaring me because it seems like a big issue and I am banging my head against my desk trying to figure it out and coming up with nothing. Here is my issue.
We have a primary domain and 2 subdomains and I noticed a problem when I was setting up a user on the subdomain today and it's something that has cropped up because this wasn't like this in the recent past. I was setting up the user on our subdomain and needed to give her access to some shares on our primary domain and noticed I couldn't search for anything on the primary domain. When I go to Locations when doing a search for objects it starts out with the subdomain and that's all I can choose, used to have the primary domain and both subdomains I could browse through! I checked Active Directory users and computers on our primary domain controller and same thing there, I noticed that the subdomains aren't listed in the tree like they used to be so I can't give anybody on our primary domain access to anything on the subdomain. Oddly enough though if I do a search and put in the name of somebody on the subdomain, it finds them!
So my primary concern here is, I need to get the subdomains to be listed in Active Directory Users and Computers in the tree like they used to be, and accessible to add users to shares on them when I am adding groups and doing a locate. I have no idea how long ago it broke, but I know it was working and I really think it's only been like this a day or 2. The only things I've done on the domain controllers recently is I installed all the Windows updates because they hadn't been updated in forever, and I got both subdomain controllers updated fully and reboot them. The primary domain controller I picked up the updates but haven't reboot yet as I haven't figured out yet when would be the best time to do that with the least disruption.
Somebody said it sounded like a trust issue but I looked up info on that and checked AD Domains and Trusts and it's setup in there and I did a Verify on them all and they all said successful. If I run a DCDIAG on any of these controllers everything passes except the SYSVOL replication part but that actually has ALWAYS been an issue so it's unrelated I assume to this new issue.
I'm really scared I can't get this fixed soon and will be fired or something, somebody please help I'd appreciate it so much! Thanks!
