RSAT - GPMC error message with search.admx
On a new and clean Vista Enterprise x64 SP1, we installed RSAT to administer a 2008 domain. While everything else seems flawlesswith RSAT, there is a slight problem with group policy management console and -so it seems- the administrative template search.admx.
After opening any group policy, you encounter an error message after clicking on the "Policies" section in either Computer or User config:
"Encountered an error while parsing - Resource '$(string,VistaOr4)' referenced in attribute displayName could not be found. File c:\windows\PolicyDefinitio ns\Search. admx, line 11, column 69"
Using notepad++ on that file, you can see that there is nothing special about line 11, column69. In fact, I even exchanged it for the search.admx of my computer to no avail.
This error does not seem to lead into any trouble but is annoying because it happens with every policy.
Does anyone have a clue?

You maybe have a mismatch between your ADM files in your computer and the ones specified in the gpo.
The gpmc needs to look to the same ADM's on a client as when it did when the gpo was created.
they are in c\windows\inf
copy the 2008 adm templates in there.

Nope. It happens on new GPOs that I create with RSAT, too.
The admx at the server (2008) are at c:\Windows\PolicyDefinitio ns. The search .admx in there is identical to mine (binary compared).

Sorry never used RSAT before, I just install GPMC stand alone on my workstations before.
But RSAT looks still kinda buggy maybe ? see at the bottom of this page

Buggy or not, I used it from the first day on two PCs and never had any problems. At the third one however...
Same domain, same client OS, same patchlevel, same software environment. So it seems like one of these "a little thing broke for no apparent reason" things.

Active Directory (AD) is a Microsoft brand for identity-related capabilities. In the on-premises world, Windows Server AD provides a set of identity capabilities and services, and is hugely popular (88% of Fortune 1000 and 95% of enterprises use AD). This topic includes all things Active Directory including DNS, Group Policy, DFS, troubleshooting, ADFS, and all other topics under the Microsoft AD and identity umbrella.
