Question

msExchADCGlobalNames value has old username

Asked by: MCPJoe

I have a mixed Exchange org, Exchange 5.5 with Exchange 2003.  Domain is in native mode, but we are maintaining one last Exchange 5.5 server for an old fax system we are about to replace.  My question is about the msExchADCGlobalNames value.  Specifically we have some users who have had name changes over the time of their employment.  These users see their old name when they send themselves a message in Outlook.  When they pick their name from the GAL it looks ok, but once the entry is added to the Outlook cache, next time they just start typing their name and it auto fills in but it shows the old name.  I've cleared the auto fill cache and re-entered it, but its not that.  I checked in ADSIEDIT and saw that the msExchADCGlobalNames value had their old username instead of the new name.  I want to edit this so that the correct name is shown and in hopes it will fix the display issue in Outlook of their old name.  The msExchADCGlobalNames value is the only place on the user properties that I see this old value, everything else shows the correct name.  I've made sure that this is not a cache issues and that the user doesn't have themselves in their contacts folder as the wrong name, etc.  This is definately an AD thing.

So is it safe to just edit the msExchADCGlobalNames value with the right name in ADSIEDIT?  I also see the wrong name in the Exchange 5.5 manager under the user properties, advanced tab, under the Directory Name attribute.  I assume the msExchADCGlobalNames value is where this is stored in AD.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi MCPJoe,

In AD, check the properties of the users. Under the Exchange General Tab, make sure the alias is the new name.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Yes, in AD the alias is correct, only where I mentioned above is it shown with the wrong name or the old name.  The only place its a problem is when the user types in their name to an e-mail, they are shown their old name.

Ok, the following article:

http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/exchange2003/exchange2003_ADSI_edit.htm

Describes how to make changes to the value... Have you tried it?

by: MCPJoePosted on 2008-12-19 at 06:57:18ID: 23212682

I understand how to change the value.  What I am asking is if there are any potential problems if I change this value.  We still have the Exchange 5.5 server in place, will that be a problem.  Also will this cause any issues with NDRs or anything if I change the value.  I just want to make sure it won't cause more issues if I make the change.

Oooohhhhh!!! Sorry, I read like my @ss again!! :)

Yes, if you're still going to use the Exchange 5.5 server, do not change the value! It seems as thought you 5.5 really MOANS BIG TIME when you do!

by: MCPJoePosted on 2008-12-22 at 05:19:01ID: 23226177

We don't have any mailboxes on the Exchange 5.5 server, it is only there for the exchange connector for an old fax system.  The users in question here do not use the fax system.  So I just want to find out if I can safely make the change and if there would be any other consequences in Outlook or any other system if I change this in AD.

by: JoWickermanPosted on 2008-12-22 at 05:42:17ID: 23226299

What does the fax mailbox do? Does it receive faxes and then forward it, or does a user/users access it to view the faxes?

by: MCPJoePosted on 2008-12-22 at 05:45:22ID: 23226322

Neither, there is no fax mailbox, the server is only there for the fax connector, the faxes are distributed via distribution list or e-mail address directly.  And none of these affected users even use the fax software, they simply had a name change and for whatever reason this attribute doesn't get updated in Exchange 5.5 from AD.

by: JoWickermanPosted on 2008-12-22 at 05:51:15ID: 23226361

Oh ok. Then there should be no issue in changing the value.

Hi,

Are you happy with the solution? If so, you can close the question and award points.

Cheers.

I have not tried to change the value, but do believe you are probably correct.  I'll close the question for now, but may revisit the issue later on....
