Question

Domain Account getting locked out due to Lockout Policy.

Asked by: DOCDGA

I run a 2003 Server domain. I applied the lockout policy as part of my Default Domain policy. I have my Admin Accounts in a OU below that. I have that OU set to Block inheritance. Even so, my Domain Admin account continues to get locked out. I unlock it and it gets locked out again. What can I do make sure that my Domain Account does not get locked out?

Password Policy(lockout) is domain wide, you cannot block inheritance. I would worry more about what is causing it to lockout. Us the tool in the link below should be helpful.

We have run Aloinfo.exe to get reports on the services running on three of the servers which are being reported by EventcombMT.exe as the cause of the account lockout - and none of them report running any services as the admin account which is being locked out.  Is there another tool in the Account Lockout tools set that could help us find the service or process using the old account info?

This is also a good article if you have not read it already. Could be something other than services. Also might want to look at increasing the bad password threshold.

A script that tells what users the services is running with. A little modify of the script and you'll see what user the processes is running as. (swap "Win32_Service" with "Win32_Process")

The issue is that the the lockout policy would not be applied at the admin OU level.  It is applied to the domain controller OU.  The password policies in the default domain GPO affect domain accounts only.

Services
Scheduled Tasks
Mapped Drives

If the password for this account has changed recently, it's also possible that an old session is still logged in and attempting to auth using a previous password for any one of these things.

Thanks for the responses.  Is there a way to query a system for every scheduled task it has?  I managed to find scripts for determining what services and processes are running thanks to snusgubben.  (Note that rather than try to modify that script, the Hey Scripting guy archives have a script to query for Processes.)

There is a WMI class named 'Win32_ScheduledJob' but this will only work with tasks that are created with AT, and not tasks created from the Scheduled Tasks in control panel.

Good news is that in Windows 2003 you can use schtasks.exe who will tell you the user the tasks is running with:

e.g. to pipe the output of all scheduled tasks on the local computer to a file ("/s servername" for remote serveres):

schtasks.exe /query /fo list /v > c:\tasks.txt
