Query Active Directory to return all the 2000 domain controllers that AD sees

Hi,

I want to do an ldap query or a vb script to query active directory to find out a list of windows servers 2000 that are domain controllers.

I ask this as I have removed all of them from a lard domain and I want to make the domain native mode but AD still sees 2000 domain controllers.  That means that I have some domain controllers that have not been demoted gracefully and I will need to clean them out before I can go to native mode.

Hence the reason for the LDAP query.

You can use ADUC to search for domain controllers (just change the role to domain controllers)  see screen shot.

You can also use adfind by top MVP Joe Richards

As the DCs have been removed, AD queries by using GUI or commands 'netdom query dc, 'dsquery server', 'dsquery * -filter "(operatingsystem=windows 2000*)"' wouldn't necessary return the orphans.

What you nead to do after an ungraceful demote is to do a metadata cleanup as described in following KB

None of these really answer the question.  

I want to search active directory for orphaned Domain Controllers that AD thinks are running Server 2000 or NT4?

The following command will list the OS of the existing servers in the DC-OU:
dsquery * "ou=domain controllers,dc=mydomain,dc=local" -attr name operatingsystem

The following command will list all existing servers running "windows 2000 server" in the domain.
dsquery * -filter "(operatingsystem=windows 2000 server*)"

For the orphan servers that has been deleted, I don't know a way to do a normal query except using the commands in ntdsutil during metadata cleanup. You nead to use the metadata cleanup method to cleanup ungraceful demoted DCs.
When using ntdsutil, it will list all known DCs (list servers in site). Select the orphan server and remove it (remove selected server)
ntdsutil
metadata cleanup
connection
connect to server <existing servername>
quit
select operation target
list domains
select domain <domain number>
list sites
select site <site number>
list servers in site
select server <number for orphan server>
quit
remove selected server
