Question

Change AD Default Settings for New User/Account Creation?

Asked by: e_sandrs

Is there any way to change a default value for new users created in AD?  We would like to have a value (specifically, the Dial-in Tab - Remote Access Permission) set to Allow by default if possible.

We know we can do this via scripting, post-creation, in a Native Win2k Domain or later.  Unfortunately, we are still in Win2k Mixed Mode right now (although we may be evaluating if we can elevate our Domain status).

Any pointers on a way to automate this would be appreciated.

Use account template.
Look at http://windowsserver.trainsignal.com/windows-server-2008-active-directory-users
It works similar way in older AD too.

Thanks - that looks exactly like what I wanted -- but it appears (at least in our Domain settings) that a Copied account resets the attribute we're interested in back to Deny!  :(

Any other ideas, or are we stuck until we get our Domain Level more current?

If someone can verify this works for the value we want on a Win2k Native, Win2k3, or Win2k8 Domain I'd appreciate it.

See EE-thread http:Q_24588399.html about configuring what attributes shall be copied when coping users.

>> Unfortunately, we are still in Win2k Mixed Mode right now (although we may be evaluating if we can elevate our Domain status).

No nead to have lower functional level than necessary.
Functional level restricts what OS-version can be used as DC in the domain. Raise the domain/forest functional level to the lowest OS-version used as DC to get the newer features in the functional level.

Make a template based on what you want, leave it as a user somewhere in AD and just copy it when you are making a new user.
Pretty simple, very inexpensive.

A nice, quick, and easy solution to my base issue (even if my current Domain level may be causing some issues) and some interesting and potentially applicable options for Schema editing.  Thanks!
