Question

Does Microsoft Office 2007 ADMX Templates work on Windows XP Systems?

Asked by: matrixnz

We are currently migrating to Windows 2008 and have a mixture of Windows XP and small number of Vista machines?  Currently we are using ADM Templates for managing our Group Policies, however I'd like to take advantage of ADMX Templates, Central Store etc..  From my understanding Group Policy ADMX files can only be "managed" by Vista and/or Windows 2008, however the policies should still apply on Windows XP Machines.  Please let me know if that's incorrect.

When I installed the Microsoft Office 2007 ADMX Templates on Windows 2008 Server and checked the policies, the requirements state:
Requirements:
At least Windows Vista

So I'm now assuming that my statement above is incorrect and ADMX based policies won't apply to Windows XP machines.  Is that correct?  Is so than I'll just continue to use ADM Templates as I know that these apply to both Vista and Windows XP.

Cheers

I can confirm that settings made using ADMX Templates do also apply to Windows XP computers. You only need a computer running Vista or above to manage group policies using ADMX templates.

Hi JBlond

Thanks for the confirmation, do you know if the Microsoft Office 2007 ADMX Templates will work on Windows XP, I'm just confused by the statement, "Requirements: At least Windows Vista".

It's confusing because the ADM work on all Versions, which means that the Registry Settings will exist on both Windows XP/Vista Operating Systems.

Cheers

ADM files do not work on Vista systems, if that's what you are trying to say. However, the ADMX files, whether for the OS or the add-ons, will work for both OS's.  You have to keep in mind, though, that there are some settings (like the UAC policies and some of the folder redirection policies, for example) that don't apply to XP.

As JBlond said, you do have to administer the ADMX-based group policies from a Vista machine; this is what the is meant by the requirement that you have to have at least Windows Vista.

Sorry for the delay, as I understand it, the ADM and ADMX are just the templates to create the actual policies which will apply on Windows 2000/XP/Vista/2003/2008/7 systems, well all except home edition.  Although many Windows ADM settings will apply to Windows Vista, there are many new settings which are Vista/2008 onwards which are in the ADMX Templates.  My query is really based on the Office 2007 ADMX Templates (see image attached) which in the explanation says the requirement is Vista, which implies that it wouldn't work on an XP Machine.  This is basically what's confusing me.

Cheers

Well, the information in the ADMX file is simply wrong. The MS Office 2007 settings set by using the Office 2007 ADMX templates do work on Windows XP.

Thanks JBlond, that's all I needed to know.
