Question

How to Copy an existing GPO to a new OU in Windows 2008

Asked by: drummer1960

I have one domain with a couple of OU's and I want to create a new GPO for a new OU that will contain one user in AD on a Windows 2008 server.  What I am trying to accomplish is ....I want to be able to add a user to this new OU that will have a couple of different settings regarding password complexity.  If I could just copy one of the existing GPO's and just change a couple of settings...that would be great.  I am not sure how to do this in the new W2K8 environment. Thanks so much!

In the group policy management console, right click on the new OU and select link to existing GPO

That is not an option for me....

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-30 at 14:14:29ID: 25706846

Ate you using the Group Policy Management tool?

by: mkline71Posted on 2009-10-30 at 14:15:11ID: 25706851

Are you at 2008 domain functional level,  I see 2008 but wasn't sure on your DFL

For different password policies if you are at 2008 DFL you can use fine grained passwords...new feature to 2008

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc770842(WS.10).aspx

AD DS Fine-Grained Password and Account Lockout Policy Step-by-Step Guide

..prior to 2008 this was not possible as you could only have one password policy per domain.

Thanks

Mike

Yes...I just have edit, enforced, link enabled...etc. when I r/c on the new GPO

by: mkline71Posted on 2009-10-30 at 14:19:24ID: 25706879

Right click on the OU instead (demazter's first post)

OK...cool...then I just choose the GPO I want to use under that OU?  Can I then r/c on it and rename it?

by: drummer1960Posted on 2009-10-30 at 14:48:56ID: 25707043

One more thing if I might.....

In this new test OU...there was already a Test GPO under it that I do not want anymore...i.e,
   OU Name
         copy of Existing GPO
          Test GPO

How do I delete the Test GPO and is it cool to do so?  When I r/c on it ....it says that I am just deleting the link.  How do I delete the Test GPO altogether?

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-30 at 14:49:54ID: 25707051

The GPO will be listed under the Group Policy Objects section.

You can remove the link and the GPO

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-30 at 14:50:38ID: 25707053

If you don't use it then it's OK to delete.  You can make a backup of it first by right clicking on it if you wish.

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-30 at 14:52:01ID: 25707055

Rename which?

You can rename the GPO or the OU if you wish.

by: drummer1960Posted on 2009-10-30 at 14:52:13ID: 25707058

Is it ok to rename the Copy of the GPO to another name by r/c on it and Rename...that does not affect the one I copied from does it?

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-30 at 14:53:15ID: 25707063

No it will only effect the one you are renaming, it will not effect the one you copied from.

Awesome support!!!

by: drummer1960Posted on 2009-10-30 at 15:07:45ID: 25707116

When I renamed it....it changed the name of my existing OU GPO name to the new name and both OU's have the new GPO in them...??

by: drummer1960Posted on 2009-10-30 at 15:08:27ID: 25707118

Does it have something to do with Link Enabled or something?

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-30 at 15:12:29ID: 25707132

If you rename the Group Policy then any associated kinks will also change.

by: drummer1960Posted on 2009-10-30 at 15:18:10ID: 25707161

What I want is for example

     OU Name
           Power Users GPO Name

     New OU Name
            New GPO Name

Is this possible
