Question

Group Policy Preferences Printer Mapping too slow

Asked by: Perlo

Environment:
Citrix XenApp (all on Windows Server 2008 SP2)
AD 2003
Printserver Windows Server 2008 SP2

I'd like to use GPO Preferences for printer mapping. I set up the printer mapping using the create or replace option. So far everything works fine. The printer gets mapped but the user logon time (part of printer mapping) takes much to long. In the event log on the citrix Server(where the user logs on) I have following entries:
Description:
Log Name:      Application
Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Winlogon
Date:          04.11.2009 06:53:08
Event ID:      6005
Task Category: None
Level:         Warning
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:
Description:
The winlogon notification subscriber <GPClient> is taking long time to handle the notification event (Logon).

Log Name:      Application

User:          N/A
Computer:
Description:
The winlogon notification subscriber <GPClient> took 75 second(s) to handle the notification event (Logon).

This is the time it takes for only 1 printer. Do I map more then one printer the logon prozess takes far too long. Do I use the normal Logon script (Kix) for printer mapping it is much faster.

I played around with different options on the general and common tab of the printer preferences but with no change in logontime. I use Item-level targeting with "user is member of the security group"

Any advice for correction on the gpo preferences?

Hi Faraz
Thanks for your reply

I am not quite sure if I get your point reading your suggested article. I already use OU's and security filtering to narrow down the focus. For testing the printermapping I have the security filter set to one Citrix Server and one Testuser. The hole logon process (Applying gpo's) to the Citrix server takes only about 1 minute when I leaving out the printermapping part. Putting the printermapping part back it takes an aditional minute to complete. So therefore I guess that the problem ist somehow related to printer mapping with GPO Preferences since when I use ordinary login scripts (kix) it's shorter.

Roman

Hi,

Did you check to see if it affects you, run the following command as an administrator (you may need to turn UAC off, or open NETSH with a right click and run as admin selected).

NETSH INTERFACE TCP set GLOBAL autotuninglevel=disabled

If it works, it will do so immediately, no reboot required. If it doesn't you can turn it back on by the following command.

NETSH INTERFACE TCP set GLOBAL autotuninglevel=normal

There are some other levels if you wish to experiment; use a question mark after SET in the line above to see all the options.

If I might ask, what 'directions' did you end up finding for this problem? I have the same problem, but can't tell from your comment whether the solution provided by the Expert was actually correct or if there was something else you did?
