The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

FTP Folder Error... Windows can not access this folder - Can't connect to FTP using domain name

Asked by jondrejik in FTP Servers, Domain Name Service (DNS), File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

I am having trouble with an FTP server.   Whenever I try to access it via IE in active or passive mode I get the following error pop-up...."FTP Folder Error.... Windows cannot access this folder.  Make sure you typed the file name correctly and that you have permission to access the folder."

If I access the ftp site using the direct IP address everthing works.  FTP site answers and I am able to login and post files.   It just doesn't work with the domain name.   The text I am typing into IE address bar is....   ftp://xx.xx.xx.82 (works) or ftp://www.domain.com (no work)

About a month ago we broke out the website from the ftp site moving them to 2 servers each with its own permancent IP address.   We use GoDaddy so we've configured two A records.  One A record is for the www site and it points to IP address xx.xx.xx.84.   The other A record for the ftp site points to xx.xx.xx.82.   The domain name for both sites is the same.

If I try via the DOS command window using ftp xx.xx.xx.82 then I get the Connected msg and have the option to enter the user login.   If I use ftp www.domain.com command after 30-45 seconds I get the following response.... "ftp: connect :unknow error number"

Appreciate any help with determining why the direct IP address works but the domain name does not.
