Of course the solution can be customized and if you want to do a lot of customization you can start with PHP's built in language support for FTP. Here's a good tutorial:

Browse All TopicsHi everyone!
My question today has to do with web front ends for FTP servers. By this I mean having a GUI for uploading and downloading files from a web browser. We currently use IPSwitch WS_FTP Server 6. Recently IPSwitch has release a new addon/module - the WSFTP Web Transfer Module (http://www.ipswitchft.com
It carries quite a hefty price tag... $2,500.
Does anyone know of an open-source, free, or cheaper alternative?
My primary goal is to integrate a user interface in our websites that allows our clients to upload files to us, without the hassle of having them install an ftp client or configure anything on their end. Ultimately, I would like to provide them with user credentials and a quick one page guide explaining how to upload files. Bonus points for secure solutions.
Thanks in advance!

Not Free but...
Serv-U by Rhinosoft is a bit cheaper. No branding option unless you buy the Gold package. $1500 for 2 years.
Works great and no messing with the sometimes unreliable and break prone Open Source stuff. Over the years I've learned that sometimes you save yourself time and money buying a supported packaged option.

If you have an Apache webserver with PHP there are several open source web-to-FTP clients you can use. Some are generic and will allow access to any FTP server, but this one seems to do what you want:

I Googled for "php ftp".
