One important thing to keep in mind is that the NAS isn't designed for heavy access usage - so long as the number of people using it and the number/size of files is not significant, access times shouldn't be too severe.
I should note that the ReadyNAS's built-in security is very limited and should not be exposed on the outer perimeter of your network (ie. exposed to the Internet). FTPs are prime targets for hijacking and the ReadyNAS's security is mainly designed to stop internal users from accessing files/folders they don't have permission for.

Depen ding on your network topology and edge devices (firewalls/routers), yes you can setup your readynas to be accessed over the internet.
You can create two or three or folders for every user and restrict them to those only when accessing off the internet via ftp/https this way they can upload documents etc to the ready nas.
Also, if you are in a windows env you can check the link above to integerate it with Active Directory.
For more security, you can setup readynas with unknown port numbers for e.g. 44000 and on your router you can specify that any request for https://readynas:44000 redirects to port 443 or port 80 on your ready nas ; this feature should be on your router.
what kind of router you are using, how many users you want to setup for online access ?
